Bethesda creates a masterpiece with 2008's Game of The Year: Fallout 3
Killing time is one of the things this game is best at. And no, that is not a bad thing. My first run-through of this game, I did all but about three of the side quests that earn you trophies, and it took me roughly 80 hours to complete. My second time through, I thought I found a lot of new stuff I had never done, this file was played for about 60 hours. My third run-through took about 70 hours, and I couldn't have imagined there would be game I hadn't seen. I was wrong. Currently I am on my fourth play-through and am still finding new quests and talking to people I've never talked to. I'm amazed by this.
The story of this game is truly exceptional and must be played for you to really understand why it is so great. I regret not being able to put into words how much I love this story without giving away anything. I choose not to be a spoiler. lol.
Now not all of that time is spent on the basic game. I have the GOTY edition which came with all five DLC's: Broken Steel, Point Lookout, Mothership Zeta, The Pitt, and Operation Anchorage.
Each DLC offers roughly 15 hours of game-play, depending on how eager you are to talk to every single person, and how careful you want to be while sneaking.
The graphics on Fallout 3 are incredible. This game came out in 2008, and I'm writing this review on June 22, 2011, and I still consider them to be fine, not out-dated at all.
The only real issue I have with this game, and I think it's only a problem on GOTY Edition, is Lagging and freezing. This happens quite often on the DLC's, and only once in a while when playing the main story. I believe the developers just thought the Blu-Ray disc could handle about twenty mega-bites more memory than it could when they added the DLC's. This can get a little annoying if you don't save frequently.
The combat system is a little hard to get used to, which creators must have foreseen. Because the VATS system helps tremendously for inexperienced players. However, once you've played the game for so many hours, you get used to the real time combat, and I hardly ever use vats anymore, unless it's a particularly large group of enemies or I'm low on health.
Overall this is a truly amazing game. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. Had developers fixed the lagging and freezing issues, this would be a sure 10 out of 10.
