Fallout 3 had a loyal fanbase, so naturally once DLC for the game started popping up people got excited. But, the DLC had mostly proven to be shallow in terms of content, and not nearly worth the 800 Microsoft Points one had to shell out on the expansion packs. But with Bethesda's fourth DLC pack, we finally get our money's worth. Point Lookout's dark marshes, and interesting quests make for by far the best piece of Fallout 3 DLC we've seen so far.

As with all the DLC things get kicked off when you receive an indicator telling you about how to get to the new content. Players must venture to a riverboat in the southeast corner of the Wasteland. Once you arrive, you will receive a quest to look for someone's daughter who had run off to Point Lookout. From there the plot thickens, although it really loses focus. The side quests are also quite interesting, especially one in which a character must discover the fate of a Chinese spy.

Unlike the straight up shooting of Operation Anchorage, the straight up snooze-fest of The Pitt, or the set-piece battles of Broken Steel, Point Lookout is more akin to the formula we've experienced in the main game of Fallout 3. It's equal parts exploration, decision-making, and action, and it ends up a refreshing change back to the norm.
It's also worth noting that enemies are much tougher in Point Lookout and chances are you'll need a character over level 20 to have a fighting chance.
There are quite a few new items in Point Lookout, you'll find plenty of new pre-war gear, and some cool weapons such as the sawed-off shotgun, bio-gas canisters (a type of grenade), and the Microwave Emitter.

From a technical standpoint, Point Lookout is quite impressive. Players get a new, open environment that has its own unique graphical style. The marshes of Point Lookout are very dark, its inhabitants are mutated to a point of looking kind of cartoonish, and the overall ambience is quite creepy.

Point Lookout is by far the longest of the DLC packs, the main quest will take you a good 3-5 hours to complete, and there are 5 side quests, as well as 5 unofficial side quests. All that and you have a pretty expansive environment to explore (and it definitely is worth exploring). I spent a good 10 hours checking out most of what Point Lookout has to offer, so if you really want to take your time moving through this expansion pack, you'll probably get about 10-12 hours out of it also.

If you're a fan of Fallout 3, and have been discouraged by the three previous DLC's, there's no need to worry about Point Lookout. You get a great new environment, plenty of new quests, and quite a few new rewards that end up making a package well worth your 10 bucks.
