First, this game isn't necessarily for everyone.
It's controls can be a bit clunkier than other RPG's.
It has more glitches than most games at release.
You can walk across the entire map in twenty minutes.
However, what this game has makes all of that totally irrelevant. This game is realistic.
It's controls are clunkier, because it's not just 'hit X for this combo.' or 'hit right trigger and enemy catches on fire'. In fallout you have to aim, not just at the enemy but at specific parts of an enemy. If I have a rather tough humanoid i'm facing, i'll probably take out it's legs before going for the kill. To do this, I actually have to stare down iron sights at tiny little legs thirty feet from me, pull the trigger, deal with any recoil and a moving target. Any terrain around me is an advantage. If I see a pile of boxes or subway car near me, I know I can climb them. Bethesda doesn't show you anything you can't go in or on. There are no invisible barriers. This produces a much more realistic environment, as well as makes combat rather strategic.
It has more glitches than most games, but that can be attributed to how complicated it is. Like I said before, there are no invisible barriers. Every action has a reaction. The game will never tell you that you just can't do something. Because of this is can create some occasional awkward encounters. Like characters that won't move from doorways(You can't move NPCs, so you kind of have to wait for them to walk away) or it happened a couple times that my gun wouldn't fire, but I holstered it and when it came out it was fine, so only a minor inconvenience.
Last, you can walk across the map in twenty minutes. This is technically only true if you sprint through and totally ignore everything. In reality, no human could possibly resist all you have to offer. In twenty minutes you'll probably pass 5 settlements, a few more sewers, 56 buildings(that you can always enter and explore) and a few factions you could join. One of the great and unique things about this game is that it is totally packed with action and events. There is no filler material or towns that just exist to look pretty.
On the topic of exploring, the amount of loot in the game is insane. In most games it bugs me like crazy how you fight someone who has crazy strong platemail armor, a 6 foot warhammer, and a shield made of enchanted steel, but when you kill them you loot and get about 6 gold and a ball of yarn. Like where did all that armor go? Bethesda wouldn't do that though. If you see any item at any point in the game, you can find a way to get it. Whether it's armor on a person, or some item. This again, contributes to the realism.
There are no invisible barriers. If you see a mountain in the distance, it's not a background, it's a fricken mountain. Go explore it bro.
