The HARDCORE mode has made this game so much better than Fallout 3. You truly feel the need to scrounge to survive.

Many of the reviews are actually getting it right this time believe it or not. The game looks the same, the interface plays a little better, the quests are better and the world seems more alive. However, the MAJOR difference that has me hooked is the hardcore mode. It feels like an old school RPG where the auto leveling of creatures seems gone and the need to survive immerses you in a truly exciting environment. You are constantly planning meals, drinks, sleep, and good luck if you get limb injuries and don't have a doctors bag or a doctor nearby. I don't fast travel so getting badly injured out in the desert at night trying to get shelter and medical attention is a wonderful experience. Btw you can make campfires and cook food. Also, you finally get binoculars so these dangerous areas can be scouted out prior. And speaking of dangerous journeys, many areas are INFESTED with higher lvl creatures thus making it a must that you avoid certain areas. The factions in the game also make you ponder where your allegiances lie. Kudos to Obsidian for making a game that, yes is buggy, but is truly a far better experience for the real RPG gamer.
