A glitch for almost every improvement
In spite of the glitches, this is a great game. It's the master of immersion. There is a huge range of civilization in the Mojave, from drug-fiend raiders, to the ruthless legion to the "refined" White Glove Society of the strip. And, you can become an enemy of, or ally yourself with almost all of them. Not only can you be liked or disliked by the various factions, you can earn a mixed opinion. You can't join a faction, but I appreciate the game's design that you are very much apart of the Mojave and it's factions, but ultimately your own, independent character. Karma is given a back back seat but it's still there to be disregarded when you steal that Nuka-Cola Quartz. I think the reputation system is an improvement.
The combat is great. You can go in guns blazing, high as a kite on med ex, psycho, slasher, rocket, jet, Dixon's jet and ultra jet, with perks like quick draw and rapid reload to give you that extra cowboy clout. Or, you can sneak in, survey the place, lay down some mines and remote detonated C4, take out a few enemies with a fire axe and wreak havoc from the shadows with perks like piercing strike and splash damage. I've played two characters so far. One is a super smart scientist, energy weapon wielding heavy drug user. The other is a tough-as-nails survivalist cowboy. If I wanted to cover the amount of stuff you can do as far as crafting and perks that can reinforce characters like that, this would be a lot longer.
So, if this game were to just work without the occasional blood rage induced by an hour of unsaved progress suddenly lost, my inclination would be to give this a 9.5. I agree with gamespot's score. But, I bumped it up to an 8 because I enjoy it so much. EDIT: Nevermind, the last 5 times I've played this game for at least an hour, it froze. Completely absurd. So, I'm retaliating in the pitiful way I can. Minus 1 whole point! You hear me Bethesda/Obsidian!?
