A Family Guy fan will love, a serious gamer will be disappointed, a combination of the two will feel outright insulted.
It starts off very promising, even showing the opening credits of the television show to further assure you, the gamer, of the high attention to detail that will follow. Don't get me wrong here, the game's characters, environments, comedy, and overall feel scream authentic. This is the highest accolade any fan could ask for. The problem is, that after a paltry 3-4 hours, its all over with. The game lets you play single or co-op with a friend in a choice of vertical or horizontal split screen, allowing for another gun to help you plow through the raging armies of Bertram. From Amish to cripples, to space chickens and pirates, this game takes you through many universes of hilarious antics and cameos by your favorite Family Guy characters.
The difficulty is handicapped by 2 things. Most importantly is the length of the game. The levels feel rushed, and only the introductory level seems to have the feeling of a quest based action shooter. After that, its pretty much just blast your way to the end, defeat the boss, and venture to the next universe. The other aspect of difficulty comes with hundreds upon hundreds of cheap deaths. You may not even know what killed you because you can go from full to null within a second. This doesn't even really matter though, because there is only a mild penalty for dying. You have cash removed from your stash which is used to purchase upgraded weapons, costumes, and stat bonuses. This leaves the difficulty at meek to laughable, because it is only on the boss fights that dying really will irritate you to the point you want to smash the controller into Meg's face.
I enjoyed the game enough to finish it so that I could see the ending, because even with all its flaws, it was classic Family Guy writing and the jokes are always funny. I just feel that there could have been so much more fun to be had with this game. Any fan of the series would be ashamed not to play this, if nothing more than to support the studio so that another game (hopefully more complete) will be released in the future. Until then, I would recommend this game only with the stipulation that you know up front not to expect a perfect gem. But even flawed gems can shine, as this one does.
