Meh

With the last few months of playing action RPGs I was ready for a shooter. And having loved Far Cry 5, I was excited for the sequel. However, it's been a bit of a let down.

Don't get me wrong, the game looks beautiful and the gunplay is good. And the saw launcher is by far the best weapon albeit having only one shot before needing to be reloaded. While I would love to have more than one shot per reload, I understand the reasoning; having multiple shots would make the weapon overpowered. I also would have liked to have seen a couple more weapons like that, weapons that were cobbled together that aren't so similar to weapons you would get nowadays.

But that's where the good ends and the game turns to mediocrity. The way the open world works is something that almost works against itself. It's a little hard to describe but there's almost a little bit of disconnect between the story and exploring. It doesn't feel like you're forced to do either unless you want to. There's no real push to work on the story, unlike other open world games. If you're like me, meaning not great at games, your first thought is to upgrade your character's perks, weapons, and base in order to make the game a little easier. That means you spend a bunch of time exploring and gathering resources rather than work on the story.

Plus with how things are presented, the two villains are essentially bullies and you get a feeling that you want to fight back against them. But after a few lines of ominous radio transmission after you take an outpost, acquire a specialist or something similar, there's no real consequence to it and you're free to do what you want. In another game, after those sorts of lines, you might expect to have some pressing mission or activity involving those villains. Here you don't. Here you get islands of story/emotional involvement that aren't strung along as well as it might be done with other sorts of games.

My other gripe with the game is that, considering that it is set seventeen years after Far Cry 5, it seems awfully flush with plants and animals. Yes there are desolate areas but there seem to be too many areas that look too good for the amount of time to have passed after a nuclear detonation. Personally if the environment is going to look that good I would have rather preferred 50 + years to have passed.
