Far Cry is a beautiful looking game that somewhat falls flat on the story and the game play

Far cry Instincts is not a port to a system like Doom, or Unreal tournament, but instead is a brand new story and game. The Far Cry Instincts story revolves around a man named Jack Carver, an ex navy man that rents out his boat for paying customers. Jack gets paid to take a woman named Val to an island that is crawling with Mercenaries put on the island by a crazy scientist named Kriger. During the course of the game you fight through Mercs, and Scientific mishaps using guns, traps, and feral abilities. The character models and graphic of the island are very good, the island never really seems like something is really out there like some other FPS do such as Doom 3 where you feel like anything can jump out of the darkness. While with Far Cry your radar pretty much gives away any surprise about your enemies that you would have had if you didn’t have one. And later in the game there are some enemies that actually scream at you when they run towards you. Your weapon systems pretty much divides in to three sections that can be selected using the D-pad. Pressing right on the d-pad will open up your handgun weapons, left opens up automatic weaponry, and pressing down opens up your sniper rifle/rocket launcher weapons. You can also double wield your hand guns and automatic guns by pressing their corresponding directions twice. All though you can only have one type of weapon per slot you don’t really have to make that much of a choice for which guns you should carry. The most that you have to really worry about is should you take the shot gun or should you take the SMG, or should you take the Sniper Rifle over the rocket launcher. The traps are only in two types and you don’t really use them that much after the first couple of levels, the first type is just making a vine whip that goes on treed that whacks the crap out of mercs passing by. The second is your basic Claymore mines, which blow when someone walks into the radius of the mine. About half way through the game you’re captured and injected with a chemical that starts to change Carver. He wakes up and has new powers; the first one that he gets is this feral attack which can kill any merc and send his body flying. But over time he gains, feral speed/jump, and the ability to track your enemies from their scent. These powers pretty much take over once you get all of them, and there lies the problem with the game. With your powers you can run faster and attack the mercs a whole lot easier, guns just become what you use to either back the merc up so you attack them or just to shoot the larger enemies that you find later in the game. The enemies also are not that bright, and pretty annoying especially when you want them to fall into a trap. The most stupid thing I have seen them do is just ignore any sound made by the stones you throw to get them to fall into the trap. Now if you’re a merc and you’re on an island where some crazy guy in a Hawaiian shirt going around killing people you’d probably be out there on your guard. The game is actually pretty short only about 11 levels that you can finish in about a weekend if you have nothing to do. The game is pretty fun and since I don’t have Xbox Live I never really got to try out the multiplayer so I have no comments on that part. But all and all Far cry is a pretty decent game, not worth the fifty dollar price tag but if you cant resist the graphic or the ability to smack a merc off a cliff or run an gun action then Far Cry is for you.
