Most FPS presents a linear path where the main focus is on engaging the enemy with your reflexes and sharpshooting skills. Far Cry improves the genre by giving you an open-ended environment most of the time with multiple paths where guerrilla tactics shine here. Also, the AI is incredible (tallies with the desired difficulty settings), making Far Cry one of the most engaging FPS in gaming history.

Within the campaign, it's easy for FPS beginners to get into, and the difficulty ramping is smooth, which allows time for exploring and sometimes it's rewarding, with those occasional surprises of acquiring late-game weapons early. Regarding shooting gameplay, headshots are gratifying whether achieved with a sniper rifle or a handgun, though stealth shooting, which is game-stealing fun here, is hindered by a lack of weapon choice.

Vehicles are fun to use, especially the 4WD and the patrol boat, where you can abuse rockets on those pesky guards on the cliff or at the beach. The glider, though briefly utilised, is a fitting addition to the game. Definitely an FPS collector's item.
