You think twice before snaping shots again...

User Rating: 9.3 | Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly PS2
Fatal Frame II: The Crimson Butterflies is one of the few games that could easily fit on the big screen without great trouble. Get the game, write a scrip and find actors to play it. There you go: instant success and a great (really GREAT) scary movie. I could put only Vagrant Story in this rol, since there are much little screenplays that would fit right in a translation between videogame and movies...

Well, but I'm here to talk about the game!

On Crimson, you will find one exquisite and compelling gameplay that will make your bones chill. Since the main character is a defenseless japanese girl, you will find yourself pissing your pants once you face the horde of vengeful spirits. No, you don't fight kung-fu nor have a rocket launcher, so be afraid. Very afraid...

All you will have to avoid being killed by a wandering soul is the Camera Obscura, an object that plays almost like a character on these games. The camera will mostly guide through your journey to escape the Forgotten Village and it will be your only friend. You have your sister, but she's NOT playing on your side...

Graphically, this game has much top offer and delivers a great sensation of claustrophobia and fear: all the scenarios are rusty, blood soaked and old. Thank God videogames don't have smell, or you would have some trouble keeping your lunch inside your guts. Sometimes the game gets a bit too dark, something that will prevent you from enjoying the detailed landscapes and scenario, but it will increase your fear meter and make your little flashlight an important buddy: one that you will miss in some situations.

The sound is awesome and the voice over deserves praising, since is not that often we see american voice actors do such a work (sorry, guys, but the japanese seiyus are gods of voice acting). The spirits here are on the spotlight: from wounded people to playing children (and even a spooky crying baby), all the lamurious lines they deliver are great, sound right and make you feel terrified. The screams are made to be heard loud, so, if you have the freedom to put the sound near the maximum, do it. If not, in order to avoid the FBI knocking at your door and asking who the heck you are killing, use headphones: it will be worth!

The controls will respond quickly and make you feel a little pain, if you are not used to first person shooters. But I am not, and I learned how to use them fast, so you can do it too.

The only drawback is the fact that the Tecmo guys made and improved version to XBox, with and alternate ending that, despite the game gives you clues all along the storyline, never takes place on the PS2. This is frustrating, but the game is great and have LOTS of replay value. It's a must-have, so what are you waiting?

GO and GET IT!
