Fatal Frame II has a deep story that even has a slight connection to the original Fatal Frame. You don’t need to play t
As you continue with the game, you will learn more about the village and the people who lived there. You also learn about the rituals that were performed there. One of the rituals involves twins.
The graphics and controls in Fatal Frame II have improved over the first game. The characters move and look more fluid and they tend not to get stuck on corners (as much), but there are still some problems. They are still using fixed camera angles. You could be running in one direction and then the camera angle changes. When the angle changes, your character changes the direction they were heading in. At times it can be a little frustrating, but nothing you can’t get around.
The camera has changed from the first game as well. When you look though the camera, it still goes into first person view. Instead of having the camera power its self up, there is a gage that lights up when you are getting close to a ghost. The closer you are the bigger the blow you will deliver to the ghost. You can also get something called a shutter chance if the gage turns red. These hit your enemies hard. With in the shutter chance you could also have the opportunity of performing a fatal frame. A fatal frame will also hit them hard, but if you are good on your timing you can perform combo shots after your fatal frame.
There are two new modes that are introduced in Fatal Frame II. The first is FPS mode. I prefer playing games where I can see my character, but the FPS mode does become helpful. Just like the first game there is a ghost list you get when you beat the game. The list shows you the ghosts you have already gotten. Some ghosts are very hard to get when playing the game the original way, but when you use the FPS mode, they become a lot easier. You also don’t have to worry about the fixed camera problems in this mode.
The second mode is survival mode. This mode you can unlock after you beat the game. You play in the same town, but it is a lot more challenging. It starts you off at one point and wants you to get to another point as quick as possible. If a ghost attacks you once you are dead, unless you have a spirit stone. This saves you from dieing, but then the stone is gone until you can find yourself another one. It’s a great addition for those who were not really challenged by the main game.
As I mentioned before your spirit list returns after you beat the game. Mission mode has also made its return from the first game, but has changed a little bit. Instead of you just trying to kill the ghost and get a high score off your last shot, it tells you what they expect from you for that mission. You could play one mission and it just wants you to take a picture of a ghost that runs by. Take that picture and you complete that mission. Then you could go into another mission and they want you to defeat all the ghosts within a certain amount of time, or they want you to get a least a certain number of points. It’s a nice change, and I was happy to see it return.
Overall Fatal Frame II is a great game. It has its flaws as well as improvements. It has an interesting story and replay value. Anybody who liked the original Fatal Frame or just likes the survival horror genera would like this game.
