Advance Wars copy
User Rating: 8 | Field Commander PSP
Field Commander is a turn-based strategy that is basically a clone of Advance Wars for the GBA and DS. Veterans of the Advance Wars game will instinctively know all the same tricks often before the game even tutors you in them (such as using AA guns against infantry as well as air units, and cruisers (or "corvettes") against air units as well as subs. The units are basically identical in function to units in Advance Wars, plus or minus a few units just to add a dash of variety. Instead of presenting a simplified overhead map and prerendered (stylized) fight animations, Field Commander combines the two resulting in 3D maps with the battle interactions taking place on the map itself. This also has the added effect of making the maps feel smaller as each unit represents just one unit rather than a group of units like in the Advance Wars games. Those who haven't played an Advance Wars game (especially DS) will be satisfied with Field Commander as a turn-based strategy game but AW veterans will find the characters and general presentation a little bland. As one can tell, I am biased towards the Advance Wars series of games but Field Commander does a good job of bringing a similar playing experience to the PSP and I have enjoyed playing it very much.
