Yo-Joe! FC replicates the near-future warfare of GI Joe better than the franchised game itself does.
Sound familiar? Even though this game came out years ago, it's uncanny how relevant it is to the revamped GI Joe franchise.
Anyhow, onto the game itself. The game is your conventional turn-based strategy game, and most of the reviews have done a good job describing it. There's a very meaty campaign with a decent storyline and good voice acting to give some life and personality to an otherwise dull genre. You have a good number of unit types at your disposal and it's a chess-like matchup between one unit's weaknesses/strengths vs. anothers.
Instead, I will focus more on some of the negative issues that haven't been addressed as much -- or apparently weighted as much in review scoring. I'll start by saying that this is still a very good game, but is severely hampered by the extremely weak AI.
In fact the AI is so weak I wouldn't even call this a strategy wargame... it's more like a puzzle game with tanks and military themes. The AI behaves in a very predictable way. It poses no challenge in itself, and any difficulty is really produced by the "unknowns" of the map setup/timing limitations/division choices/you being outnumbered. Once you figure out the "trick" to each mission, you'll be able to beat it very easily as the AI behaves the same everytime (so this definitely limits the replayability of the campaign).
What are some of the shortcomings of the AI? The first and most obvious problem is the lack of strategy in the AI. It's very easy to bait him, as he'll always go after the weak infantry units even when there are closer more relevant targets he can easily eliminate to reduce the threat to his forces.
The other area of deficiencing is the build logic, which has been mentioned also in other reviews. The AI tends to build whatever it can based on limited funding choices rather than saving up for a unit that can be several times more effectice (i.e. tying up his own factory building worthless grunts where if he just waited one more turn he could build a medium tank).
It's a disappointment because the production values, mechanics and gameplay are great, but the AI puts a damper on the long term value of this game. I would still give is a good recommendation it as a general strategy game, just not for those looking for a "wargame".
