In game play, Field Commander is in the same school as Advance Wars (GBA), but esthetically mor reminiscent of C&C Red Alert. Solid game mechanics make for a few enjoyable hours of tactical manouvering, stealthy or brutal warfare. The AI is not very bright though, which is a bit disappointing, but opens up to many different successful strategic choices, that might be basis for replay value. SFX is alright, but the soundtrack is very repetetive indeed. Graphics and animations are allright, its very rewarding to blast that gunship out of the sky with your snipers… The atmosphere seems ok to, given a few variations in weather weather and terrain. Sometimes you’d wish for a bit more map to maneuver on though. Limited map space makes warfare pretty straight on, making you choose only between units and pace mostly. A few enjoyable hours is also all you get, it felt a bit short for my liking, and more downloadable content would have been nice… you could have been offered to play the bad guys, thats always a blast. Settings let you disable most animations which renders a more chess-like gameplay, that can be enjoyed in its own right. Have not tried any multiplayer options, they might give you a good time too.
On the postive side, Field Commander raises expectations on coming strategic games, and is really enjoyable while it lasts. On the negative side, it’s too short, too small and has a not enough challenging campaign mode.
Finally another great strategy game for the PSP. This game is an excellent asset to the PSP's library, and will give you hours and hours of game play that is basically unlimited with the multiplayer time you can put in. ... Read Full Review
