Don't expect it to be cooler then AW, however it isn't that bad

User Rating: 6 | Field Commander PSP
Field Commander is Sony's answer to the Advance Wars series, so how does it do. Well, I gave it a six because:
I like classical TBS
Fast paced and easy to learn game play
Good mission variety
Lovely multiplayer
Many, many Divisions and Units
Long single player campaign
Good graphics

I didn't give it higher because:
Dumbest AI I've every seen in a TBS videogame (+ Easy missions)
Small maps
No randomly changing weather effects
Not many new ideas for TBS games
Not many maps outside the campaign
Sometimes repetitive
Not much music and glamorous animations
Hard to tell units

This game is pretty much a dark and grittier Advance Wars (Apart from AW: DOR). If you're used to AW, you'll easily get to the mood of things here because it copies it. Although Advance Wars didn't create TBS, it did bring plenty of new ideas that this game copies.
The game has 3 single player modes, tutorial, campaign and quick battle, 3 modes of multiplayer, Transmission, Ad-Hoc and Wi-Fi. First the single player. The tutorial is pretty helpful even if you're used to AW and it starts the story, it has land air and sea training. Quick battle is versus mode because, you just chose your map, commander and Division, and then you start the battle. But the most fun and useful singleplayer mode is Campaign. Unlike most PSP games the campaign mode here is long (30 whole missions long). It tells the tale of ATLAS and terrorist organization Shadow Nation. There are also plenty of character and Divisions to meet. Unlike AW, the COs in FC aren't important, it's the Divisions. All the Divisions here have their own back stories, strengths and weakness and "Division powers" (just like AW COs).
The problem with this game though is it lacks "life." Unlike AW which has glamorous animations for CO Powers and for battles, this game has no Division power animations and boring battle animations. The game AI is really stupid and it has to load to give commands (maybe all PSP TBS titles have this problem). The units can also be very hard to tell to.
Overall, however AW is better than this game, but then this game can still provide you with some fun.
