This game seeks to deliver in every aspect, and comes up very close to perfection, even with a few minor hitches.
Brief football gaming history- Let it be known that while I have historically preferred FIFA over the Konami series, there was a time when Konami reigned supreme in my mind. Back when it was known as International Superstar Soccer (ISS), Konami really had the gameplay down. Everything from give-n-gos, through balls, volleys, crosses, bicycle kicks was there, and worked great! Its was a seriously fun gameplay mechanic. Not to mention you could add curve to the ball after shooting, which made for some bigger than life goals. At the time I was all 11 so the licenses didn't matter much, just a good time. And konami delivered. At some point in the next generation (PS2 maybe?) I walked into a Gamestop and saw FIFA being played in the corner. As soon as I touched the controller a smile came to my face. It looked just like real soccer, from the players to fans igniting smokey flares and waving flags. This was real soccer, and I had to be a part of it. I have played most incarnations of FIFA since then, and in some respects things have gotten better or worse over the years. So let me attempt to shed light on why this FIFA is the best.
Gameplay- At its core, FIFA10 is a great piece of software. The game engine is fantastic. Words can't describe how fluid the game can really get. Although I am still adjusting to the PS3 version of the game, I am wholeheartedly impressed. The skill moves are incredible, and useable, albiet only in the most choice situations. Passing is rewarding, and there is something about a cross that just feels real. Aside from the fact that the players can easily float in a cross in just about any situation. Truth be told, the gameplay is the strongest part of the game. Its SOLID. There are some minor bugs, nothing gamebreaking in my opinon.
Virtual Pro- This adds a whole element to the game that I have been dreaming of for many years. You create your character like any other sports game, but then you can apply your picture, or gameface. Its pretty scary how real I look in the game. You can even select a commentary name, for which fifa had both my first and last names available. its kinda cool to hear Andy Grey say my name as I break away for a goal. You also build stats based on accomlishments, like say, scoring from 30 yards out might increase your long shot stats. Accomplishments come in the form of stats, but also accessories like boots, and celebrations. Plus you can take your VP into any mode and continue to build his stats. Its the best implementation of create a player that I have ever seen, hands down.
Mangager Mode- This is where I end up spending the bulk of my time. Once bored with it I just play matchs online. But right now, I'm having a ton of fun with this. Its much like previous versions, but its more difficult! I got canned in my first season, grantedm I could have done better. I was sad at how harsh the board was, but at least it presented a challenge! Form plays a key role, and for me this adds a twist. One day my CM Kevin Nolan was not looking good, so with form he was a 72. Next game he played well, scored and assisted and jumped up to a 75 in good form. I like it, it s fun and makes you think about your managorial decisions.
Online- I can't give a full account of this. I have only played two games, and lost them. I'm still learning the tricks of this FIFA, so there was no point in playing the Manchester boys online. My only criticism of online has to be that every player seems to choose Manchester or Real Madrid or something. Maybe this is why I hate those big teams. With all the teams available, it would be nice if players choose more enjoyable match ups. Thankfully EA included several online modes for people looking beyond the 5 star teams. Theres Live Season, Leagues, pro club championships, Interactive world cup, etc. Like I said, I haven't dove in face first yet, but I'm hopeful that online wil turn out ok.
My minor qualms- So why not a perfect 10? There are very few things keeping this game from attaining a perfect rating from me. I took off a half point because they are a few things they could do cosmetically. Its as simple as atmosphere. I think EA have captured this in the past, especially with their World Cup games and Konami have done this better than EA aswell. Core to the football experience is the fans! While you don't see them while playing (cut scenes and replays will!), the fans play a role in making you feel like your there. A big game should have a higher attendance. I can hear the drums and chants, but I can't see them. Might be cool to have hardcore supporters behind the goals, Giant team flags, drums, and the occasional red smoke billowing from the stands. This would be intense during a big game. And if they really wanted to go all out, how cool would it be to see the home team litter the field with debris at watching their team lose a cup game. And I think its a no brainer, players need to get muddy and wet. And footsteps in the snow! Really, this is just nitpicking, but its the only qualm I have with a really stellar game.
Props to EA, this is a fantastic showing. I will be logging many, MANY hours with this one!
