To start off, this is the first boxing game to impress me since “Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!” back in ’87. All other boxing games that I have played were just sloppy button mashers (other than Fight Night 2004). This game has gotten a lot of popularity, and I think it has deserved every bit of it. The game takes time to master because of the ‘Total Punch Control’ in which you must flip the right analog stick. The motion in which the right analog stick moves, your boxer’s arms move in that motion. It is tricky at first, and you may get frustrated. But don’t quit and let it change your opinion on the game. Pretty soon you’ll get the hang of it and appreciate the game of what it really is. In career mode you can either pick a professional boxer, or you can create a boxer and rise through the ranks. When creating a boxer you start as an amateur and can go professional after a short amount of time. You can stay amateur longer, with the ability to get an amateur title. You can raise statistics by training, which is before every professional fight. The gameplay is just simply fun with wonderful knockout sequences. The AI does get a little repetitive at times, but does not take away from the fun factor. Some fights require strategy, rather than trying to beat the crap out of your opponent. Before fights, you buy entrances, trainers, specialists, and even ring girls. Each raises attributes, along with new gloves, trunks, and mouth guards. The gear you buy can definitely have more depth, because after winning millions of dollars the money seems pointless with nothing to spend it on. You unlock trophies by accomplishing goals such as winning titles, raising attributes to 100%, or punching accurately. All of this makes the game worth playing. The graphics were good, but could have been much better because of the low amount of objects on screen. But they were good nonetheless. The damage on the face is very detailed, and pretty much flawless. Punch movements are just right. The one real down point is the sound. The terrible mainstream rap makes me mad how EA is stereotyping. A lot of boxers are Spanish, but that doesn’t mean you put in a song completely in Spanish and expect to keep fans happy. Sound effects are good though. Any fans of boxing should enjoy this. But many non-fans should enjoy this as well. At least rent it, and you should enjoy this.
