I never played Final Fantasy, so I decided to kick it off with FF1&2 for the GBA, going old school. I can understand the appeal the game must have had back then, introducing many aspects of modern dungeon crawlers and spin-offs. Loot, Bestiaries, Character classes, round-based combat (think HOM&M, AOW, Pokemon etc.) and so on. Yet, I found the game to be strategically unchallenging and way too easy. The rock-paper-scissor system of the fights is too uninspired and shallow for my taste. I never had to make one single tough decision because eventually, you would always bet the monsters. Sadly enough, weapons always make more damage than spells in the end. The presentation is neat though, so is the soundtrack. It is alright for a handheld I suppose and I can see the point dwelwing into some hack n slay during a bus journey, but with much more complex titles at hand, there is no need to play this game, except for historical or nostalgic reasons.
