The Peak of the JRPG
The story, it flows masterfully, with perfect pacing and lots of flexibility for you to play ta your own pace.
The game..even asks YOU, at a point in the game: the story will now branch off into separate points of view.. which one would YOU like to play through? and in what order?... that, blew my mind, at age 17, after playing so many modern games with there technology and beastly engines... never had i played a game, that told a story like this, or put the player first as such, in an industry with linear games that drag you along a very un-fluid story, ..FF6's story telling experience was BREATHTAKING. FF6 gives off a very strong sense of wonder and adventure, one that is very difficult, or almost impossible to emulate
The Characters, all masterfully written by Hironobu Sakaguchi, i would argue this installment was some of his best work, even over the stellar FF4
every character from the mysterious Shadow, and Terra, to the charismatic Locke, to Kefka, one of the most iconic game villains in the entire history of the industry, is both memorable, and entirely believable in there own sense. Even more impressive, is the multitude of side mission catering to the many characters, some with plots, just as impressive as the main story itself.
the soundtrack is curtsy of none other then Nobuo Uematsu, every track feels tailored to the point of perfection, matching every moment with precision.
one thing that made FF6 so unique, was how different each characters gameplay mechanics where, at first you only have Terra as a magic user, and locke, as a thief, but as time goes on, your introduced to numerous charters, Celes a former empire general who can absorb magical effects, Sabin who utilizes a fighter styled input system to execute a slew of special attacks, Master swordsman Cyan, who can charge up his sword to unleash different styles of attacks, and many others.
customization is high in FF6, from simple Relics to equip, such as resistance, and increased running speed. however, the real treat is the Magicite function, which not only enables the use of powerful Summons, but a suite of magic to use, unique to each magicite. and as a character gains experience, they can learn more magic from that specific magicite, this adds a lot of depth to the gameplay of FF6, more then one would think, its makes experimenting a very rewarding experience to see which magicite works with which characters.
now usually i dont give to hoots about graphics and presentation, but FF6, actually balances it quiet well.
for a SNES title, the level of detail in the sprites is highly impressive! giving backgrounds and environments a very polished look. character spites also have a large library of emotions to display, a nice touch to a sprite based game, one that was not overlooked.
overall, FF6 has a lot of charm, an adventurous and timeless tale, a loveable cast of 14 playable characters, stellar soundtrack, and a near revolutionary gameplay mechanics, make for an impressive title, one that cements the very definition, of JRPG
