Good, but highly overrated

Despite what all the ravenous fanboys will tell you, FF7 doesn't deserve a perfect score and your life isn't null if you play it. If you can borrow it from anyone, go ahead and give it a 30-minute trial at least. You'll probably be able to hold onto the story's plot and push yourself through the battles if you have enough patience.
The game's story is a little more developed than your typical FF. That's basically all that's different in my eyes. Yes, Sephiroth and Cloud are cool. But I'd barely spare them a thought after moving to another game.
I'd give this game a 7.5 if asked at random, but we'll see what I work out with the Gamespot system.
