I just don't get it.

This is the game that made me decide that RPGs aren't for me. I bought this game at the same time I bought my PS2, because I'd heard nothing but great things about it from my friends. I have one friend who swears it's one of the best games ever. Besides, I used to love RPGs back in the day, so I thought I'd definitely enjoy this. So, I bought the game, and played it for about an hour, and turned it right off. It sat there in my game collection, neglected, for another couple months, and then I thought I'd give it another try. I was sure I hadn't approached the game in the right frame of mind, and should come to it without any expectations. So, I really gave it the ol' college try this time. I spent several hours playing the game, and got all the way up to the Blitzball tourney, and then I'd just had it. I've not played it since. I don't even care to finish the game. I agree that the game is pretty cinematic. The voice acting is good, and the graphics are nice too. But if I wanted to watch a movie, I wouldn't be playing a video game. I think the combat system is just insipid, and utterly unchallenging. The puzzles are plain-as-day easy, the sphere grid is an interesting take on the whole level-up thing, but since combat is so easy, even the idea of a level-up seems pointless. On the whole, it seems to me that there's just no skill in playing this game. It's more like a story you participate in. I guess that as an idea, a story that you participate in isn't such a bad one. But I didn't find this story in the least bit engaging either. The plot was forced. The characters were utterly two-dimensional. The situations were completely contrived. If this had been a book I was reading, I'd have put it down after the first couple chapters. I guess I just don't get it.
