So much potential but it falls flat in many respects.
I really tried to like this game, I really did, but in the end, I had to give up on it. FF12 started out with a lot of potential, the opening FMV video showed a lot of promise of the game's epic scope and story that I would hope to encounter in this game, but 20 hours later, I was wrong.
I enjoyed the combat system and license board(which everyone seemed to hate), but what really killed the game for me was a lack of an emphasis to make me finish the game. The bosses started to get too hard and required huge amounts of time of repetitive fights with monsters in order to level up, and even if you leveled up, bosses(such as the Elder Wyrm) were impossible to defeat. Also after around 10 hours into the game, the story begins to fall short, with only a few instances brief(I mean VERY brief) cutscenes of the characters mentioning where they have to go.
The characters are also a bit flat too, the main character Vaan, doesnt seem to be very involved and the only interesting character is Bathiler. The game's plot was interesting enough to me, but it was way too similar to Star Wars,(heck the 6 party members each remsemble a character from the old trilogy). But as I mentioned earlier, as you progress on in the game, the plot is barely mentioned, making the whole game seem a bit pointless when you're spending hours and hours running through the game's vast maps.
Overall, I don't think FF12 is a bad game, it just needed to give players better incentives to finish playing the game such as character development, more emphasis on the story, and it needed to fix the difficulty levels for the some of the major bosses.
