Excellent Game, but not a classic
The story is better than most other RPG's out there, but it's nothing special in the world of Final Fantasy. I feel there were too few cutscenes to really feel involved with the characters. Humour was almost completely absent. I don't remember any quirky, funny moments that were so endearing in the other Final Fantasy games.
As for the battle system, I really could have done without it. I would have prefered the standard real time, turn based combat. This battle system was not very exciting at all, and my biggest gripe is that the Espers were next to useless. I used them early in the game, and never had to use them again. The quickenings were pretty cool. I would say they were the highlight of the games battle system.
Now, I know this review seems pretty negative for a game that I've given an 8.5, but I expect more from a Final Fantasy game. The production values are excellent, the graphics are top of the line on the PS2, the voice acting is supberb, and the music is excellent as well. But, at the same time, it's not a game I'll remember for the rest of my life. I was actually relieved to beat the end boss. I had enough of this game by that time.
