Excellent Game, but not a classic

User Rating: 8.5 | Final Fantasy XII PS2
I bought this game along with Rouge Galaxy sometime in mid-2007 because my xbox 360 was out for repairs, and I am an avid gamer and needed something to play. I have played most of the Final Fantasy games including the most recent 5. As much as I liked 12, I couldn't get over the feeling it gave me. It became tedious one too many times, and during those hours of leveling up for a boss, I became distanced from the story. I really didn't find the story all that interesting, either. I understand that Final Fantasy games take pride in their difficult bosses, but with the semi-real time action style this game chose, I didn't expect alot of grinding for levels.

The story is better than most other RPG's out there, but it's nothing special in the world of Final Fantasy. I feel there were too few cutscenes to really feel involved with the characters. Humour was almost completely absent. I don't remember any quirky, funny moments that were so endearing in the other Final Fantasy games.

As for the battle system, I really could have done without it. I would have prefered the standard real time, turn based combat. This battle system was not very exciting at all, and my biggest gripe is that the Espers were next to useless. I used them early in the game, and never had to use them again. The quickenings were pretty cool. I would say they were the highlight of the games battle system.

Now, I know this review seems pretty negative for a game that I've given an 8.5, but I expect more from a Final Fantasy game. The production values are excellent, the graphics are top of the line on the PS2, the voice acting is supberb, and the music is excellent as well. But, at the same time, it's not a game I'll remember for the rest of my life. I was actually relieved to beat the end boss. I had enough of this game by that time.
