For a first impression of FF13 I was blown away but at the same time wondering if I was really playing a FF game or RPG for that matter. I've played every incarnation of FF so I've been following the changes Square has been making in the series. To say the least I'm not all crazy about this evolution of FF. If your expecting it to be like Dragon Age (Awesome game by the way) or even any earlier FF game for that matter you'll be disappointed. FF13 is stripped down so much it's hard to refer this game as a RPG. There really isn't anything here that defines it as an RPG other than the storyline and the title of the game being FF. It's linear, little armor or weapons upgrades, no mana, lack multiplayer control and sadly no towns to explore. So, what do you call this game so you can make a fare assessment of it??? With FF13 I tried not to focus on the whole RPG idea and take it for what I think it is....and what it is I like to describe as a Cinematic RPG or CRPG. Where in this case storyline rules and eye popping graphics are the focus. So, after changing my focus I'm able to really appreciate this game a little more. First, graphics are incredible and the storyline is entertaining so far. This is easily one of the best looking games to date. Other game developers will have their hands full to match FF13 as far as looks. Second, yes there is little modifications you can make to the playing mechanics, but some of the playing mechanics are not so bad either. The battle system with the Paradigm shift is a fun twist and can be very strategic for different battles. Would I rather be controlling all my characters...YES! But non the less the battle system works in a way you feel as if your in control. Third, sound is typical FF fashion so if you've liked other FF music/sound then you'll like it here. Finally, storyline. I'm not fare enough into the game to give a fair review on that so that will wait for another day, but so far so good. So, by taking all this into consideration and everything I have said about RPGs I would rate FF13 as a RPG with a 8.0, and a rating for what I feel FF13 really is a CRPG with a 9.5. Whether your a RPG fan or not FF13 is worth a play through. Rarely will you see such imagination and eye popping graphics as FF13 offers.
