A Classic old school RPG! The best of the best
Final Fantasy is very basic from today's point of view. Back then i'm sure it would have been the best. But we aren't living in the past, and I'm judging it from today's point of view. The few things I didn't like were the length, story and no real character development. I beat the game in a little under 20 hours. Which is ok, but really good rpg's are around 40 hours. The story was also a little bland. Its about 4 warriors that come together in order to save the world, and in doing so they must find the 4 crystals. Then there really isn't much else talked about or added to the story, which kinda makes is boring. Lastly, the lack of character development is sad. Characters aren't given a set name, and you can't even see any kind of interaction between the characters. Again if this were 1987 I would be impressed, but even games like FF IV has amazing character development and story. This game however was seriously lacking.
But on a positive note, most of the game was very satisfactory. It definitely gives you the old-school feel. It has the classic turn based gameplay. It has all the classic Final Fantasy elements that make it so mesmerizing. The game flowed very smoothly. I don't think I got game over once. It is pretty easy, but as long as the game is somewhat lengthy and enjoyable that isn't a problem for me. Its actually a very good thing, it makes things less frustrating. The graphics and music are also top notch. The graphics are very solid, and colorful for a 2D game. The detail on the warriors and enemies is very impressive. The music in this game is great as well. There isn't a lot of selection, but the music played in the dungeons is very exciting, and the music in the towns is very soothing and relaxing. The ending was nothing spectacular, but it left you with a good feeling in yourself. The message was very positive, and it just left you in a good mood, knowing you were playing the original classic in the amazing Final Fantasy series.
If you are looking for a RPG to play on the PSP, there are better games, but this is a great old-school game. Its the game that started it all for the Final Fantasy series. While it may not be the best, its definitely one of the most fun and enjoyable. It's an enjoyable ride that is hard to forget.
