User Rating: 8.5 | Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones GBA
I purchased Fire Emblem: the Sacred Stones at a big bow retailer packed in with another game for a low price. That price was more than right. I've been a fan of strategy RPGs since another game that I won't mention yet in this review wowed me as a child. Fire Emblem SS is a strong strategy RPG. The battles are complex enough to be entertaining and short enough to fun. Item management has some interesting nuances but is not too involved. Units are varied and represented well on the battle map and in battle. Fire Emblem is a fine game the story is full of interesting characters and dialog is not too lengthy.

Now for the bad news. Fire Emblem is not Dark Wizard and excellent strategy RPG that appeared on the ill fated Sega CD system. After having cut my teeth on Dark Wizard as a kid I am used to a much better level of play in my SRPG. Fire Emblem forces you to progress along a set path from battle to battle. In Dark Wizard you chose what territories to fight over next. Leveling in Fire Emblem is handled by items in Dark Wizard units leveled up due to xp bonuses and changed into a class you could select. Units in Fire Emblem are irreplaceable if killed (forcing you to replay the same battle over if you wish to save that unit) in Dark Wizard units can be revived post battle. Fire Emblem is played on a grid and not on a hex map like Dark Wizard. I suppose if the only bad thing you can say about a game is that it is not an excellent game that must make it a good game. Fire Emblem the Sacred Stones is a good game just not a "great game."
