The second Fire Emblem to hit North American soil is no slouch of a game. The game progresses a lot quicker than FE7 in both in terms of its plotline and also getting more units to control a lot sooner. The tutorial mode I'm sure is helpful, though I never used it myself as a veteran from FE7... Personally, I enjoyed Lyn's quest from FE7 as a nice way to slowly ease into the game, even if it slowed down the plot progression a whole lot (as in, her quest has almost nothing to do with the rest of the game's plot). FE8, however, completely eliminates that problem from its plot progression. It starts with a disaster, and you are immediately thrown into the action. I found the storyline and characterization to be tighter and more well rounded overall in this game. The new system of choosing your class changes is great (IMO), allowing you to customize your team to your own play style. Although it is often clear that certain characters are designed more specifically for certain roles, for veterans who know their play style this shouldn't be an issue. The extra battles and the two optional tower/ruins levels are an interesting addition, but end up making the game easier in the end. For gamers looking for a greater challenge, just ignore these battles for a more traditional FE playthrough. It is nice, though, to be able to get all your characters to 20/20. Just for the heck of it. Overall, this game is a good buy, and with the split quests for the two main lords, you should be able to get at least one replay out of the game if not more.
I'll end by saying this: Valkyries and Mage Knights are kick*ss.
