My blog comments are all being th umbed down again. I really, truly, sincerely wish to be granted the ability to disable this feature. It does absolutely no good, and it sure does harm, because I view this as harassment, and I know other people who have comments abusively rated as well. I'm just throwing this out here to see whether or not GameSpot is actually considering letting us turn of a very useless feature.

I have to agree with this. I don't even see what the use is for comment ratings. Do we even get anything out of it if we have lots of thumbs up? I know enough thumbs down, the comment isn't seen or something to those effects.

JPL, you probably already know this, but I'll throw it out there anyway.:P

I was reading comments about a new game a few months back, and of course there were the inevitable comments that were "thumbed-down" for one reason or another. I gave a thumbs-up to one of them, and the server caused the comment to become visible again, due to the ratio of votes.

I agree with you that this is a problem, and one thing that would help is if there was a way for the system to let staff know who the culprits are who go around abusively thumbing-down comments.

To be honest JPL, I made my Profile and blog "Friends Only" to preclude any of this from happening.:)

Yeah, that was suggested to me the last time I brought this up. However, that's entirely unfair to other people who check out my profile. I'm not going to hide myself just because someone's being a jerk. And yeah, if GS is going to leave the commenting system here, the least they can do is track the users who make ratings, so if someone is doing something asinine like thumbing down all the comments again, we can report it and something can be done.

I'm not "hiding".:P:lol: (and I know you didn't say that).

I did it as a pre-emptive maneuver: I was swamped by several tracking requests from members who had nothing at all in their Profiles. There was nothing for me to track back on - not even a single game listed in their game collection.

That got old really fast.:P

I do think something needs to be done. Since admins don't have the comment ratings when they post comments, I don't see why we can't have that option either.

Good points. I agree wholeheartedly, as long as the switch wouldn't cause any glitches in the programming.

JPL, in the interim while you're waiting for a staff to answer, perhaps you could click a thumbs-up for all of the comments in your blogs.

I do that so people will know I read their comment, and if at the moment I don't have time to type out responses.

Yeah, I do that to try offset the red, and then what irritates me further is sometimes either the same person with different accounts or other people will just continue to thumb them down.

But still, I dont know why the staff does absolutely nothing about this. This isnt the first thread about this and not the largest either.

Well, if you temporarily changed your blog over to "Friends Only", then you could narrow down the problem - if it still keeps on happening then it's one of 900+ people who are tracking you that you didn't track back.:)

I agree. The ratings system, both on blog pages and in article comments, is being abused on a large scale for the exclusive purpose of harassment and blatant censorship. Putting in the hands of anonymous users at large the ability to thumb down and eventually hide the comments of other users is an absolutely terrible idea. I can grasp the initial good intentions behind it, but it's time to recognize how horribly abused it is, and set it aside altogether. Starting with ratings as an option on blog pages, and if that isn't possible, just remove the feature, please.

The reason why I disagree with this is that I don't think it does any harm. Some may think it's unnecessary but if a few people like the comment ratings then it's worth keeping isn't it? Especially since I don't think there's much reason to dislike it, if someone thumbs down your comment, it just means he doesn't agree with what you said, it won't hurt anyone.

Just take a look at the topic creator's blogs and you willl see if the system is used by some people just to disagree or simply to harass.

There is an upside to it, because some really nasty comments can be hidden, but those are usually on the news article comments, where heated debates take place. I don't really see a purpose, though, for there to be comment ratings on blogs...

There's no problem with people keeping it who WANT it to be kept, but the issue that I'm having is that they won't give those who DON'T want it the option to turn it off. GS staffers are immune to their comments being rated, and why do you think that is? Because some of them were harassed by people thumbing their comments down just because they were GS employees. Now why on Earth are WE not allowed that convenience? And for you to understand why I made this thread, you need to have a blog whose comments were consistently thumbed down for more than year. It doesn't matter if they agree with a comment or not; they're thumbing down EVERY comment to be a jerk about it, and that's an attitude that GS needs to give us a defense against.

I read the above posts and I think it will be best that an option that limits the daily thumbs rating is added to the system. For example - you can thumb up/down only 5 comments per day.

I haven't had massive thumbings down on my blogs, but I know it is abused as hell on live events. Especially on E3.

Not good enough, any system that allows for any anonymous harassment is flawed and must be changed. They either need to go altogether, or be an option that is able to be turned on or off by blog authors. All this is asking for is basic fundamental controls, of which we seem to have tragically little.

I think it's not that big deal. They should only turn off the option that hides a message when it has like 10 thumbs down and it will be all fine. I mean who looks at thumbs anyway? There are some stalkers that give me like few hundred pluses at my blogs' comments but I'm sure that those haven't even read the comments they are rating.

Never happen to me til today, i commented on a friends blog, who was being thumbed down on every comment .... like 5, 8 times on each. This morning i find the same thing on my blog too. I mean it doesnt really bother me so much, but yea it is harassment and i think there should be an option to turn it off .... or at least have thumbs up only on blogs.

If you think deeper, there are stalkers that are ready to register like 10-15 accounts from their computer and thumb down every your comment, making it to hide. Basically, if you've got enough haters, they will hide your comments no matter what your comment is. I've seen a few times, a guy's opinion that differs from the most people's is being hidden by them. That's not cool.

LOL! In one of your blog posts, a majority of the comments received exactly three thumbs down. It's like someone solely created alt accounts to torment you in this fashion. Crazy.

I'm really sick of the thumbs-down also. In order to truly be safe from it, I think you either need to be a paying member (don't quote me on it because I've never been one and do not know all the abilities they're given) or you need to cut your friends list down to only the most trustable members and put your blog on friends-only, which both of these options are far from ideal. I'm tired of having someone thumbs-down all my comments and not admit to it and give a decent reason why. It's just stupid to me to have someone be doing this and able to get away with it. If you could either install an option for us to turn off the thumbs, or just get rid of them altogether, please do so, I'd highly appreciate it.

But it is doing harm. When a comment is voted down, it gets hidden. It's blocking out good posts just because of biases or fanboyism

Over a month has passed since I created this thread. I'm not asking for anything to be down now, but what I AM asking is that SOMEONE on staff respond so I that I at LEAST know this is being taken into consideration. Pardon me for sounding impatient, but I hate what's being done to me, and I don't feel like I'm getting any support from GS about this.

Just wanted to repost my support for this. I can understand Gamespot not wanting to remove it entirely, but some measure needs to be taken to combat abusers of the system.

In that vein, a rather good idea from a year ago:

Create an off/on switch for the thumbs in blog posts. Bloggers should at least have a chance to turn off the voting completely in their own profiles. --Hungry_bunny

I agree. Youtube and other sites have this because there are no moderators there to deal with comments (and no rules as far as commenting goes) so letting users rate is an effective idea. On gamespot there are moderators who can deal with abusive comments and the blog poster can delete them also. I think they should keep the thumb up option, there's nothing wrong with that and it can be a useful feature when used properly. But I think blog posters should have their own comments exempt from being hidden, or the thumbs down option scrapped all together since any comment that is really that bad would be dealt with by the mods anyway.

I agree, it is a bit annoying that GS is more focused on videos and such than the community's boards and profiles. If I wanted more care put into videos I'd visit YouTube. :P As long as someone from staff at least can reply and tell us something, anything, I'll at least be happy knowing this wasn't just ignored.

Also agreed. It's so amazing to me how shortsighted GS can be sometimes. How anyone who spends even a moderate amount of time on the internet, least of all runs their own website, didn't see this abuse coming..... it blows my mind. What blows my mind even more is that GS seems to not really care.

I cannot deal with this any longer. I've been forced to disable comments on my blog because I just can't take seeing everyone being thumbed down for no good reason. Plus, people are being thumbed down to the point of being hidden more often now. And I STILL can't get a word from a GS staff member if this is being taken under consideration! This is very unprofessional. :|

All I did was change my privacy setting and I got it to stop. Not the best solution (both of ours), but it works. I, too, await a staff member's response.

I think blog comments shouldn't have that feature, but comments on a new game or a new video from GS should have that feature, to thumb down fanboys/girls.

edit: it seems I, too, have been hit by some looser who thinks it necessary to stalk my blog and thumb down every comment posted. Can mods see who thumb down ? Or admins, for that matter.

I realize you guys are busy, but it would be nice to be able to do something about unneeded degrading of comments, just because of a silly vendetta

I haven't had this problem, but I've seen this on a couple of profiles (as well in some news articles). Peoples comments are thumbed down for no reason at all. So I support this idea. Make it thumbs up only, or give the user the option to disable comment ratings on their profile.

Can we at least remove the thumbs up/down in blog posts? All it does is allow anonymous individuals to troll users.
