I have a free account here at gamespot, but when I looked at the credit card bill, there is a charge for 39.95. that matches the price for a total access year subscription, when i certainly didn't sign up for one. I don't know how gamespot even has my credit card number when I don't recall entering it even.

Check your charges again, and if it is indeed from GameSpot, then contact Customer Service to inquire about it.
There is almost no way you can 'accidentally' enter your credit card information, when you go to create a new account you can choose basic or total access, then it takes you to a billing page which you have to choose either annual or monthly payments, so I don't see how you accidentally entered your information thinking you were signing up for a free account. But your account isnt total acces and theres no other way Gamespot would have your credit card information so I doubt that charge is from Gamespot.
