Is there any chance we could implement a chat feature so that we could instant message users who are online?

Similar to the Facebook chat chatting device!

If you are talking about a private chat thing, the closest we have is the Private Message System. As far as public chat goes, GameSpot has them for certain events like the Electronic Entertainment Expo every year, but most of the time it is for paid users. As far as a private IM thing, I don't think GameSpot would be up for that. It would be ridden with abuse.

Indeed. There was a chat on the E3 shows - biggest spam I've ever seen. A few moderators VS thousands of users. We better stick to the PM system for now.

maybe a little pointless that i will reply to this as i probably wouldn't use it if ever there was one. however, i am a little surprised by this discussion because i could imagine an answer like "gamespot should be gamespot and not the n-th social networking derivative but with a gaming theme" (which coincidentally would be my argument of choice) or i could imagine there being technical issues when implementing this here (it's far from flawless even in facebook after all) but instead of hearing that i find some reasoning against it that is a little strange to me.

this would just be between friends (facebook chat is, and that's what he is suggesting) so if there is spamming or abuse, the receiving party could just "un-friend" them and that would sort itself out right? in the process this might even give some substance to what being a gamespot friend really means, which would reduce the likelihood of abuse happening in the first place as you will put some more thought into who you actually befriend. i have personally never encountered abuse on my facebook chat..

THe problem is that chat boosts everyone's post count. Someone could friend themselves and spam them, boosting thier count.

The chat's we'ved used for live events do nothing to post count, so I'm not sure what you're talking about here.
