Poll Do any GAMESPOT USERS enjoy the non-gaming news? (29 votes)

Love it mate, gimme more!? 7%
It's alright, I guess. 21%
I don't have any opinion either way. 10%
I don't care for it at all. 31%
I F****** HATE IT! Remove it and focus solely on games! 31%

Do any GAMESPOT USERS like the non-gaming news?

I left the following comment on the recent "The Walking Dead," Article, and thought of creating a wee poll to see what other Gamespot users thought? (I actually said much more than this but this is the question I wanted to ask others.)

"I can't believe how much this site has changed. This article appears in NEWS... Why? Can't gaming news and entertainment news be kept separate from each other a wee bit more?"

@punksterdaddy: If it isn't that it's their excessive ads and their failed attempt to circumvent Adblock.

@punksterdaddy: You posted this in Off-Topic Discussion. This is specifically a feedback thread about GameSpot, so it is supposed to start in Bug Reporting in Feedback.

@BranKetra:

It is not a feedback thread for Gamespot though. It was my curiosity on what other site users thought of the non gaming news in the news section.

Now barely anybody will see it, so thanks for that.

@punksterdaddy: Two things:

  1. The entertainment section of GameSpot is the same site as what has news and discussions about gaming.
  2. As a matter of fact, most threads on the first page of Bug Reporting and Feedback have hundreds of views.

Please do not be rude. I am seeking to help. Not only will users see your post, but GameSpot staff is more likely to as well.

I think it's both a good idea and a business necessity for a site as large as this one. If people don't want to read it, hopefully, they'll be able to just avoid the entertainment sections and things will be fine.

@BranKetra:

Number 1 makes very little sense to my point. I know it is the same site, I was talking of the volume of non gaming news in the NEWS section. I am not an idiot, I know it is the same place for both but this was a gaming site and it has more articles now on entertainment than it appears to have about gaming... I didn't say it was a bad thing, I wanted other users opinions on it and now I get far less for your not needed interference.

The thread has been live for an hour and so far it has two responses, not including you or I and one was already here with his own post, so yeah you have killed it mate, I say again, thanks for that.

I was not being rude, you moved my poll for no good reason. I did not require staff to see it, it was for my curiosity only and it was off topic from games. It felt like a more appropriate place for the poll than in bug reporting and feedback, still does.

If anything your response to me is far more rude. "As a matter of fact..." It is condescending and unwarranted, but who am I right? You are the guy with the power, so what you say goes.

If you are still seeking to help, then put my post back so I can get some actual results from it and not these biased ones that I am bound to get here, if what you say is true and that this is where the staff are going to see it.

I do not need their input, I already know what they are going to say.

So again, yes the poll is all but useless now. I'm guessing that was intention though.

@Starshine_M2A2: It's not that they have that type of content on the site, it's that they stopped filtering it out of the news feed where the majority of the users get their gaming news. This is 'game'spot, not ign.

So again, yes the poll is all but useless now. I'm guessing that was intention though.

1. My first point makes sense in that you decided to say that "It is not a feedback thread for Gamespot though. It was my curiosity on what other site users thought of the non gaming news in the news section." Like it or not, feedback about GameSpot on GameSpot goes in Bug Reporting and Feedback. As the Code of Conduct states, you do not have to like the rules, but we expect you to follow them. All site feedback goes here and we made it that simple to avoid clutter.

2. You designed your thread this way. The apparent lack of responses could be due to the minor amount of content in your opening post. Forum users, here, like much quality content.

3. As stated in point one, the rules that all users agree to follow when using GameSpot as stated in the Code of Conduct require us to post in the correct forum. Not doing so on purpose can lead to moderations.

4. Saying this: "Now barely anybody will see it, so thanks for that"- is sarcastic mockery. If you would like to continue using GameSpot, you should probably respect other users enough to not mock us including moderators because that can lead to a moderation as well. Please keep that in mind moving forward.

5. Your post stays here.

6. You do not know what the staff is going to say as they have not responded yet. Instead, you assume that you do, and that is fallacious thinking that caused your thread to be moved here in the first place.

I do not know what you are expecting from Off-Topic that you cannot get here as it is the same user community, but if you would like to dispute this decision, feel free to contact @digitaldame, the GameSpot Community Manager. Thanks.

Personally, I think that the thread is fine here. What I do have a problem with is that we were told by GS staff that the news section would NOT have non-gaming news in it. I came here wondering if some of the staffers were just getting lazy and not properly filtering things or if GS was, once again, ignoring its users. And yes, that last line comes across in a harsh tone, but the fact that we keep getting ignored (unwanted content expansion, infinite scrolling pages, etc.) is much more insulting.

@mairsil: Lark said that Entertainment content showing up in the News feed was a bug, time will tell if that is the case.

@BranKetra:

My thread that I created was not intended as a feedback thread for Gamespot, that was my point and if I didn't word it correctly then I apologise.

It was not Feedback, nor was it intended for Gamespot, I can't be any clearer than that. It is you that has decided that this was.

So you preemptively judged my intentions as soon as the thread went up... How is that fair? You have shown your hand, you have basically admitted that you prejudged my intentions and that is why you moved it here in the first place. In other words it had nothing to do with what you previously stated, in that you moved it here because it is the proper thread for it and to get the Gamespot's staff's attention.

You see I have no history of being nasty on this site to any member of staff, I used to enjoy talking with them a few years back but you seemed to have judged me based on your own suspicions, not by what I had said or done. I even voted in the second option down.

"The apparent lack of responses could be due to the minor amount of content in your opening post. Forum users, here, like much quality content." Is that so, because the last person I talked to in a thread I created, complained for writing too much. So that is nonsense. I tried to keep it short intentionally. I also got a comment from another guy who complained that I typed an essay in his thread when it was only 5 sentences long. So not sure where you get this idea from, that people want much quality content to read.

Sarcastic mockery by saying "Thanks for that." Is now considered rude? Considering you practically killed any chance of a decent conversation on the matter by moving it, I could have said far far worse. You never even bothered to explain things properly, you just said you moved it and that was all. As I said already, you were being far more rude to me by moving my post to a thread that is more likely to be seen by the Gamespot staff and despite me saying it is not meant for them, you continue to patronise me with the stuff as I have already mentioned.

Please don't try to claim that this board has any where near the same volume of traffic as the others, same site or not, it doesn't mean anything because you moved it here to hide it away it seems to me. Also people coming to complain about something wrong with site is hardly going to provide genuine feedback.

You are correct, I do not know what staff are going to say, but that isn't the issue I have with that, the issue is more in what I know they will NOT say and that is either one of the bottom two options. Do you seriously believe that the staff will openly say in the forums that they do not like the entertainment stuff? That is the true fallacy here if you do.

If I want to continue using Gamespot, I should respect other users enough not to mock them? Well the thing is, I do give respect, I expect the same in return though and you have shown me NONE! By judging me before my thread even got off the ground, by assuming the worst and ill intentions from me, when all I did was start a Poll etc. etc. That's all!

Oh and as you likely have seen, I asked Lark Anderson about it in @suicidesn0wman's thread and he rightly does not want to get involved, what he did say was interesting though.

"I agree with you that since your intent wasn't to report this but to see what other people thought about it, it shouldn't have been moved, but I don't interfere with moderator decisions. You should reach out to @digitaldame to escalate this further, since what happened seems a bit unreasonable."

You know what I was not going to bother because Lark said it was a bug that caused this but seeing as you appear to be abusing your position, I am thinking I maybe should. The matter is now closed anyway, so the poll is even more redundant now. I did not know it was a bug and that the entertainment news was not meant to show up there at all.

So if Lark claims it is a bug that has caused this to keep occurring, then that is good enough for me. At least he was open and communicated in a sincere manner.

I know I won't be coming back here any time soon. It is nothing but hassle these days.

I've been digging some of the movie trailers, so there's that. My concern with the direction GS is taking has more to do with the dipping quality of their content than with the overall content coverage.

I'm not privy to closed door meetings (or the open door meetings for that matter, lol) so I can only speculate as to why GS or its parent company has decided to shovel so much of the puddle-deep click-bait trash our way. My best guess is that it just works and keeps us monkeys clicking for ad dollars, and honestly I'm fine with that as long as it means the quality content can remain. That said, if I start to see GS shy away from controversy, leash their editors, or increase the frequency of any "Top 5" lists I'm outta here. I'm not a monkey god dammit... more of a Planet of the Apes orangutan.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. GS has been able to maintain a deep vein of gaming competency even amidst the shitshows and controversies, and worse comes to worse there's always someone there to pick up the torch when a company goes tits up or abandons you for an easier audience.

P.S. - Arguing with moderators is a bit like arguing with cops. You won't win and there's a chance you'll get shot. (GS moderators are fucking serious man! Lock your doors! )

I don't want to see Entertainment news in the News section. It already pissed me off how I was in the middle of a self-imposed media blackout of Captain America: Civil War, and right in my game news feed I get a picture of Spider-Man with a headline about the new trailer. And, pardon me for being cynical, but I have to wonder how much of a "bug" this Entertainment thing actually is. It smells like a test run to see if they should go back to a single section because splitting an Entertainment section lost GS some traffic.

@elheber: I tell you this, if I let a bug like that exist for several hours, much less several days, I'd be out of a job right now.

I can see that this thread is not going in the right direction, so I am locking it.

If some folks would seek to collaborate more than seek gotcha moments, it could have stayed open.
