I would like to suggest the removal of the comment voting system. In theory, it was a great idea to allow the community to "self-moderate," so to speak. In practice, however, it has become a tool to silence voices of contrary opinion. A quick perusal of the news section yields plenty of examples.

When a comment is rightfully voted down, I still find myself clicking "show comment," like a traffic accident voyeur. I would hazard others have done the same.

If I am out in left field here, and other users have found it to be truly handy in limiting trolling and similar comments, leave a comment of your own and let me know.

Happy gaming,

Boz

I'm with Boz on this one. I click on every one of the hidden comments because you have no way of knowing if they were voted down as unhelpful or (far more likely) because they didn't agree with the majority opinion. Or for no reason whatsoever... I recently wrote a journal entry aboutapples--harmless, uncontroversial apples. If you look at the comments, you'll see perfectly reasonable comments by MrCHUP0N and Boz got rated down for some reason I am completely unable to fathom.

Perhaps comment-rating is a good idea on some sites, but this is not one of them.

I've hated it since they first introduced it. I want it to be gone too, but I doubt GameSpot will loose it.

It is a good idea, but has its flaws. My comment on Aaron's blog got rated down to something like -8 because I said I like Gamespot's reviews...SuperMooseman

That's just sad, I would have given you a thumbs up.

Meiko, I'm not sure what your posts have to do with the comment-rating system. It seems more like you're just just railing that some of your posts have been moderated. I'm not a mod or admin or anything, but I'll give you this advice: calm down. If someone says something you don't agree with, you don't have to immediately flame them. "He started it!" isn't a valid reason to flame or post disruptively. Ignore them or reply in a manner that shows you're more civillized than they are.

I comppletely agree. Never liked the system in the first place. There are always going to be comments different from popular view. Just because it disagree with the majority doesn't mean it needs to be hidden.

I am with you. I just had my review for Hellgate deleted for having a 'positive' rating.

These self-moderation features are actually turning around and just adding to the arsenalry of trolls.

User Reviews are not impacted by the comment rating system, as far as I know. I think your above quote is referring to a moderation of your review (if in fact that is what happened), in which case you might want to visit the "Ask The Mods" forum. ;) Happy gaming, Boz

Agreed on this, it can be easily abused and when it is there is really no need for it on our blogs. I say fix it up or take it off.

GameSpot will most likely not be removing it, even though it needs to be removed as it's a useless feature to begin with.

A good idea in theory, but in reality an abused feature by the community. I say it should be removed. After all, the "Report abuse" button is there to moderate users.

I also agree that the comment voting system should be removed, even though my opinion doesn't mean anything.

Gamespot established this forum for user feedback, and if their user base finds the feature is detracting from the site experience, it will be modified or removed. Your voice and opinion is important, and if a particular aspect of the site is not working you should let administrators know so that it can be modified or removed. I've been on this site since 2003 - off and on - and the experience is completely different than it was almost five years ago (in a good way). You should never think your opinion is so unimportant as to go unheard. Boz

If that's the case, then why isn't that ever growing list of bugs fixed and suggested ideas put into action?

I think it should be removed too.

In my last blog entry, someone made a post saying this:

Someone just gave thumbs down to every single comment on this page ^_^

I'm assuming by the little happy face at the end of the sentence the person who made the comment did it. Was this person bored and had nothing else to do? Or were they just being downright rude?! I don't think it's very funny, and voting on people's comments isn't a very necessary item that this site really needs.

I want to delete my whole blog entry now.. it really bothers me that all my friends who posted there had to be subject to something so juvenile.

I am also going to have to ask that it be removed. When it first came out I had my doubts, but I stuck with it and decided to see how it would work. Being honest here, I think it creates more problems than it is worth.

It looks like Gamespot has been hard at work repairing those bugs, but it is a big, complicated web site and glitches do occur. Boz

But here's the thing: They have 57 admins (this is probably outdated now) and these bugs have been around for over a year.

That's not always true. They may fix a few bugs eventually if you report them enough times, but they won't remove an extra feature they added just because some people don't like it. The change in review scoring is a perfect example. Many people complained about it, but the admins didn't care. They read the comments, but they just stuck with the people who liked it. Same with the comment system. They're not going to remove a feature that they worked to put on the site. So, no, your feedback is not always appreciated.

I know Gamespot is not always responsive, as they have not been to this topic, and I understand your arguments. I would like to redirect the conversation, however, back to the comment voting system instead of the site in general, though. :) I'm also hoping to get some sort of official response.

Ah... The thumbs... I assume that's what we're talking about, right? I'm glad you started this thread. It gives me a chance to share some of my feelings on the subject... Pretty much along the lines of what's been said, so I'm guessing there's not much more to say...

I'm pretty sure you won't get an official response. GS Admins usually have meetings before one of them comments on the situation. Even then, you'd need this topic to have a large amount of support for it to get a response from GS.

I like the comment voting feature, but like you said it is not used like it should be. I think it should be kept though.
