[Topic was: Quick reply and quick quote not loading - gmax]

This just started happening to me. Anyone else experiencing this issue? Also, I noticed some flash stuff on the main page not working correctly. Don't know if that's related.

I am also having this problem TC... The drop down bar for logging in is not working, the sub menu's under each platform icon (XBOX, PC, wii) has stopped working, and quick reply and edit message has also stopped. Cleared cache, Rolled over to google chrome (default is firefox), and even Opera and still have the issue. No idea what is really going on.

All of these things are symptoms of some javascript having broken. However, the site is working fine for me. Depending on the browser you're using, each one offers ways of identifying where the script is failing, e.g. the Error Console in Firefox (ctrl+shift+J)

This sounds like another outbreak of corrupted javascript files (resulting from gzip encoding of truncated files). Check your browsers javascript/error logs as dab suggests. See what javascript files are causing errors. Tell us what browsers you have. If the outbreak is short-lived, clearing your browsers' caches may get you through it a little sooner. If the outbreak lasts as long as similar outbreaks have lasted in the past, it might go on for two or three days, and more aggressive workarounds (disabling gzip encoding) might be something to consider.

Does it say anything earlier in the console? I'm thinking there will be a flat out syntax error in one the main js files. I think Asset is from global.min.js; it wouldn't surprise me if that's the one. Anyway, if one of the js files is being received with a syntax error, Firefox users may be able to request everything get sent without gzip compression. It's a risky configuration change, so users who try it do so at their own risk. In Firefox go to about:config, find the setting called network.http.accept-encoding, delete any value it may have, and apply the change. Clear cache and cookies. Restart Firefox. See if it helps. (It has in the past.) This change should only be left in place temporarily; a few days from now it should be reset to its default value. Users with other browsers can try to find out if there is a way to suppress sending http Accept-Encoding headers. The alternative is to wait it out; the issue might go on for two or three days; clear browser cache regularly to check. Edit: Just so everyone knows, when this issue has shown up in the past it affects a sizable group of users, but not everyone. The group of users it affects varies and is fairly random.

Problem still exist though I changing the option in about:config for firefox does allow it to work again. Offcourse, that is a horrible idea to keep turned off as many websites will break and speed of loading any webpage goes up 10X fold (you turning off abilty of the website to send you compressed packs of information.. everything is uncompressed).... Guess we will all just have to wait for updates to come and fix the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion about the gzip encoding. I'm also experiencing this issue, and will try it out to see what happens. Interestingly, the issue only occurs on firefox and chrome, but not IE...

I should point out that I meant that I was experiencing the problem others were having with the drop-down menu in the upper-right not working, as well as videos not playing (the dreaded "flash player 10 is required" message), but it appears this is also related to some javascript problem. Sorry to hijack the thread.

I cleared my cache and tried configuring things, but it didn't work.

Internet Explorer, on the other hand, works, but I don't want use it. Guess there's something wrong with Firefox.

I'm using Firefox and my quick quote/reply work perfectly fine. Out of curiosity I decided to try quick posting on my desktop (I mostly use a MacBook) to see if it also works on my PC using Firefox and it works perfect there as well. I don't think it's strictly a Firefox issue else my ability to use the quick post wouldn't work either.

This issue is not the fault of any browser; the problem is the result of something happening on the GS servers, and as I have already mentioned, it does not affect all users. The workaround of disabling http compression will not seriously affect broadband users, although it will consume more "bandwidth" or transfer quota, which is why it should only be done temporarily. If IE appears to be unaffected, it is because javascript and/or http compression are already disabled in IE. My general sentiment is that the workaround is too technical for most users, but I mentioned it for those inclined to try it, and because this issue will almost certainly not be resolved by technical staff before it corrects itself, which will probably happen in a few days. The easiest thing to do is just wait it out, and for users who do not want to employ a workaround it may be the most practical choice. A lot of the site can still be used with javascript disabled, but it's far less than ideal, and things like videos and reporting items for moderation may be impractical.

This won't really provide anyone with a workaround or a solution to the problem, but it may illustrate the issue more directly. I've included direct links to several of the site's javascript files below. Used in this way they would generally show a wall of text. Scrolling to the end of the very last line will show you what the browser thinks the end of the file looks like. I'm including some of the characters that are at the actual end of the file. If the end of the last line looks different, it means the browser is not getting the entire file (which is the essential problem). So here you go: The trailing characters of this file are function(){Object.each(siteMasthead.init,function(A){A.run();});}); The trailing characters of this file are this.cmd_form=null;return ;}}}};forumCmdMenus.init(); The trailing characters of this file are I.setStyle("visibility","visible");});}(); If the end of one (or more) of those files does not match the characters shown, the corresponding file has been truncated. There are other javascript files used on the site, but since I haven't been able to get anyone to find the appropriate error in their javascript/error console I just guessed and included three of them.

@ gmax

Second file for me ends in

getElement(this.sel.user_cmd);

Other 2 javascript codes went through. Using firefox 3.6, palemoon 3.6, & firefox 5.0... Guess it will vary from person to person on what actually is breaking in the scripting.

Replying because I'm having the same issues with any standard page. Though on the bright side the E3 side works, so hop over to there if you want to access pms and stuff.

Also to post this:

It works in preview so hopefully It wont derp like it did for dbramage.

You guys are looking at the right stuff. For future reference the most useful screen shots are 100% full size PNGs, and direct links are best. I was able to find such an image from LagAssassinVash's link, and although I can't actually read the text in dbramage's image, it looks like it's showing the same error. Here's a direct link to LagAssassinVash's image: What this suggests to me is that global.min.js is the culprit, which was my guess. It looks like the entire file is actually there, but the way the error message is pointing after the end of the last thing in the file has me thinking there might be some binary garbage at the end. jedikevin2 - the text you mention appears at the end of the 2nd to last line when I look at the file. It's possible the file is truncated at that point, but you might have also missed the last line, which would be way off toward the left margin because it isn't as long as the 2nd to last line. You might want to double check if you are curious. In any case you are also looking at the right stuff, but if you have a javascript/error console in your browser it might point to the problem more directly. My additional exercise is a little tedious, after all. For Firefox users with broadband the about:config / network.http.accept-encoding workaround is probably the best option. I don't know of a similar workaround for Chrome - the feeling I get is that there may not be one at the moment. I'm not sure about Opera either, but it seems more likely to have an option for that somewhere. If IE is already running without accepting gzip encoding (or if it's just ignoring the binary garbage) that might be another temporary alternative for some users.

I'm experiencing the same issue. Drop down box doesn't display when I hover over my username, quick quote/reply are not working either.

EDIT: NVM...After this post, I just updated my Java to the latest version (looks like they had a recent update I didn't know about...My computer didn't remind me of) and waited about half an hour. Everything started to work.

Unless he managed to get Java 7 early (comes out Jul 7th) the latest is 6 update 26. Which I have and it didn't help. So he might of done something extra.

Btw Java.com is the website for java lol. Look there for updates.

I've always been able to view the site and play the Video Reviews on my Motorola Xoom tablet running HC 3.1 with Flash 10.3.

For the past few days, I've not been able to view the flash content. Just says you must have flash 10.3.

No problems on any other sites. Flash just works. So it's Gamespot's problem. Until it's fixed I will not visit the site on my tablet. I will have to go to that other site (I know that will really hurt).

For those who might not already know, javascript and java are not the same thing. As far as I can remember the only time I've ever seen GameSpot use java is on the chats associated with live events like E3, and in that case, it's not really even GameSpot. All the rest of the time you can leave java disabled and you'd never miss it on GameSpot, or 99% of the rest of the internet for that matter. On the other hand, quite a bit of GameSpot depends on javascript, as this issue attests.

Thanks for clarifying that for others Gmax, I don't know how many times I've seen the same misunderstanding pop up during my time in the internet. The two are completely non synonymous in this situation : )
