Poll Should Gamespot Bring Back The OLD SITE? (235 votes)

YES - The site is way to buggy. Lots of things are missing. 76%
NO - I can deal with it as it is. 16%
MAYBE - At least until 95% of the bugs are resolved. 10%

I think this is a fair question. There are lots of things missing on this site and tons of bugs. I still can't make posts on the News or Review sites. I thought this issue would be resolved when the new site went live. Nope, didn't happen. I can actually see review videos however, which was broken on the old site. Even on the forums, which was also broken on the old site, is given me even more problems on the new site. I did 2 quote responses that worked fine, but when I tried to do a 3rd, the buttons don't work. The "quote" & "reply" buttons do nothing. It's bad enough that I have to refresh the screen after doing a reply just to get these buttons to reappear. Otherwise they disappear after I do a reply on the forum. This is just one of many, many bugs that are on this site. The new Gamespot should have never gone LIVE in this condition. I'll probably have to move to a new gaming site for a few months until all the issues gets resolved here. What say you?

I can look past the bugs to see the potential of the new design. As a developer I know new software needs soak time to settle and for bugs to be removed. Once the bugs are reduced and the speed performance increases I think the new site will be great.

I voted maybe, but until most of the bugs are worked out and at least the features that were supposed to be included are put in or back in, then they should reopen the old site and forums until it is fixed and have enough testers with enough different browsers to test the stuff out to ensure it all works.

I just want the old site back where I have different organizational functionality for my games collection, wish list and followed games. If they do that, I'll definitely transfer all the games to an Excel spreadsheet and be done with it. I thought I should do it earlier, but didn't have time. Now I have no way to get all my wish list back without going through my stack through a tedious and boring process.

PS: I wonder if they'll make a Feedbackula out of the new site problems.

For christ sake no. The old site was ugly compared to the new one. Gamespot now looks like a modern website rather than one stuck in the 90's. It's buggy right now because it's just launched, it's not rocket science.

Also, if you don't like it just leave. It's only a forum and no one is forcing anyone to stay.

I'm sure I'll probably get use to the site, wish I knew how to comment blogs, let alone find them same for wall statuses. Probably going to switch to that other account I made next week regardless that they kept the levels to where they were. Plus I keep getting a 500 something error in a few places.

@MonoSilver: Many of the people who are sticking around on Gamespot are sticking around because of their relations with the community. Essentially, you want to be on a social network that many of your friends are on; otherwise, there's no social to it. So "just leaving" isn't as easy as you make it out to be.

OT: The site could be better, but it's a big, bigchange. Reverting it back to the old site would probably take even more work than fixing the bugs (which by my recollection, is happening quite quickly). Give it a while and I'm sure it'll be fine.

Easy for you to say. I would leave if I didn't use GS to manage my games. The followed section was nice, but the ability to group the wish list and my collection alphabetically or chronologically was what kept me here for so long. And according to the poll, I am in the majority. What use is a new and shiny site if all the functionality is gone?

It's probably too late now. They really should have waited a bit longer before bringing the new site live though.

@AK_the_Twilight: Yes it is easy. We don't actually know anyone on here. We just talk to them. They're like Facebook friends, we're never going to meet anyone else from here.

Plus, we can make friends on other sites ad in response to someone else this isn't the only site that lets you have a list of your games.

Edit: Oh and this isn't a social network. It's a gaming website with forums and some social features. It's not Facebook.

I think you're being a little bit too quick to judge - at least give it a couple of weeks to settle in before jerking that knee.

Well as many have said, 'sure' it has some kinks to work out, but that's to be expected w/ re-launch/re-design of a site of the magnitude. But do I want it to return back? Hellz no.

I understand some don't like change and always want to decry 'just go back to the old site!' (not saying that directed at you, OP), but I honestly feel that the people who always say this must be those that truly have no idea the backend of how a website runs. As many in the staff have pointed out in various videos, topics, and such the site--as it was--wasn't just 'outdated' it had practically become a dinosaur, in a technological sense. I mean, various little 'band-aid' fixes over the years have help...but let's face it, the overall design and foundation of GS remained largely unchanged for damn near 20 yrs. Now sit on that one for a minute.....0_o.

It's no small wonder it didn't fall apart COMPLETELY years ago, lol, because that's just how MUCH it was holding on by the proverbial 'thread'. And at some point, those handling this backend came to realization that you can only 'duck tape' shit together for so long before even that doesn't work. Is there shit that still annoys me that I'd like improved or working? Sure. But I know it'll get there eventually. Lest we not forget, just b/c it's 'Live' it IS also still in beta; the only difference is that it's not a closed beta anymore and we're all involved.

Overall I'm pleased w/ the way the new look is and it can only improve from here, imo.

Just because you don't doesn't mean everyone doesn't either. I know a lot of people on Gamespot who are in fact my friends in real life and I can guarantee that I'm not the only one. If you don't, fine, but your example is not the example that sets everyone else's agenda. Quit being egotistic.

And even if this isn't a social network in the traditional sense, you're still talking to other people, having conversations/debates and being, by dictionary definition, social. It has a community, which, also by dictionary definition, demands interaction on some sort of level, even if it's not physical.

It's not just the forums that are buggy. There are bugs happening in every category of this site. Yes, we know that new launched sites can be buggy, but that's why you get 100's of users to test it and report all the bugs. This site shouldn't have launched with this many issues and this many missing features.

It couldn't be really much worse than the pos old site. At least I could finally get an avatar god knows how many years, and the site isn't crashing after each post I make. So no, bury that monstrosity in a lead coffin and never speak of it again.

If not bring back, they should at least allow us to view it in the older format for a period of time. I kept a list of all my games I've rated on the old gamespot and now that its gone, I feel I've lost alot of games I will never remember.

I think the new site looks modern. Everything does feel a little bulky even at 1920x1080 (forum & game sections)

There is a lot of bugs like stacks management is broken, cannot create or delete stacks (Games I've Finished View Stack) etc.

I think the overall design looks nice, but the placing of the frames, ratings etc. does not feel logical (doesn`t make sense!)

As example, the frame for (Game title,Platform,Good,Bad,Rating) must be at the top with the rest to follow below.

Get a decent GUI designer to clean up the final layout.

Also getting lots of

500: Internal Server Error (even though the mini game is semi amusing, it`s growing old with the amount of "eeeh, sorry")

when clicking on games, stacks or when using the search function.

People are being very black and white in this thread. No, the old site isn't coming back and it shouldn't. Not as many people will leave as they are saying, either. Yes, a lot of people come here for the community, for the conversations - they will survive the transition even if they bitch and moan about the bumps along the way.

But why does it have to be one or the other? There is no reason we cannot gradually bring back features of the old site and gradually make the new one look less like giantbomb. I know they have said unions are gone for good but considering they brought them over I seriously doubt UCBs are gone for good. They may no longer be managed by basic users though.

Yes because the old site was working pretty good and way more user friendly but nowadays it's all about keeping up with the Joneses. One thing I do like better though is at least now you can right-click copy/paste from Firefox with getting some stupid text prompt explaining why you can't.

I despise the fluid width being used and Giantbomb's backend being used.

The fact that it should have been based off the needs of GS and not GB considering GS is the bigger, badder and OLDER site. And to top that off everything is slower than ever now.

Also the main page is a mess, you can't get the one thing you come here for (video game news & reviews) instantly, instead you're being welcomed by video shows displayed multiple times.

They are only bringing back unions that a Leader or someone else requested to be carried over, not all of them. But that is a good point. Maybe in the future, we will be able to create new unions again. I would hope for that.

Only those by Leaders. Though, I wonder if they'll just settle for a portion of those and throw out the bulk. Seems about their speed.

I've already posted a number of times about the new site, the forum i can get used to, but i do feel like the site hasn't took a step forward but more like they have modernized it to the minimalist they thought was ok.

To tell you the truth they have got rid of all the stuff i liked about gamespot, the shows and reviews are all there of course but the one thing i liked about gamespot was the easy functionality of it, now it all just feels very cluttered, and i'll say it again there has just not been much thought to the tabs bar at the top.

With the stacks aswell once it's sorted out why not add, a consoles stack, it be good to know what consoles people have and games on which console.

Why, oh why do people always feel the need to "improve" things that already worked? The existing site could have used subtle refinements over time, sure. But this???

This complete revamp with the loss of my collection page as I knew it and all the functionality/information it contained has no redeeming value as an "upgrade" at all, no matter how you try to look at it.

I've been a regular here for over a decade and it is as if a hurricane came and completely devastated the place I used to know. They might as well have changed the name to GiantSpot or something else as well while they were at it. Gamespot does not seem to exist anymore but rather another site has taken its place.

I bother to post hoping that people at GS see and respond to this feedback. Clearly I am not alone in my dissatisfaction and bewilderment when trying to navigate what used to be Gamespot. It's a real loss but for me at least I will probably now rely on metacritic for general review info and my own personal database I am creating to catalog my collection of games, my ratings of them, etc. I don't see myself attempting to use this site as it exists now anymore. It was a wonderful 10 years. I will miss the place.

Don't go back, tweak/fix it. 90% of people probs resolved by:

Use CDN for scripts

Offer alternaive download links for videos (youtube/mp4/etc)

Dish up the right size images instead of scaling large ones

Load background images and other non important graphics after the page has loaded (lazy load at the very least)

Use CSS3 for transitions instead of javascript

I'm wondering if most people have firebug or another debugger installed and enabled. Reading the comments, there are a lot of errors in the code at the moment and if you have stepping on it will break the site, just a heads up for those that can't post comments see vids etc.

I don't like the new look. A lot of sites are trying to make their site a "compatible look" to the looks of touchpads, smartphones and iPads by minimizing the amount of small menu items to click on and make big buttons, main screen just the info you need. So half the time you are searching around on where they put the menu item you want, or have to go through more pages than usual to get what you want. For example: what I always like seeing on the main page:
top 10 new release games, coming soon games, top games, etc.
Now it has some other shit.
Menu -> PC-> all PC games. or 3ds-> 3DS games or NDS games. - now instead of sub menu's popping up, you have to click on each individual one.

F**K you gamespot. Go back to the old site.

The people who designed the site should have made sure everything was in much better working order before they launched it, and I think they rushed things just to get it to go live. I'll agree there.

But that said, I do like the new site and I'm content with the changes. I think we need to go forward and not backwards. I do think the site developers have a lot of fixes and improvements to do, and I wish I could have some sign that some work is actually being done on that front.

In my opinion this new version of site is shitty. I'm using Gamespot from almost 5 years, but now I am disappointed. Before it was N 1 for me, but now a lot of options are missing, actualy I can't find any useful information, no patch's, no info, practically the previous functions are gone, poor design and many more "new" & also bad innovations.

Sadly, but in that way this site is going down.....
