Over the past few years, I've received a lot of union invitations. I declined most of them due to lack of time or having no interest in the subject that was at hand in certain unions. However, throughout these years, I noticed another trend, which makes unions irritating and sometimes frustrating. The unions can basically "hire" you through sending you a simple invite. Once you accept, your in. Once you deny the invite, it's over... or is it? In all these years, there were 2 constants in all this specific aspect of the site: 1) certain unions kept sending invitations, even after declining them SEVERAL times! Face it, if you aren't interested in the subject at hand that is being discussed at one point, you won't likely have changed your mind after a week or so. If you always hated a certain union because of the fact that it handles an RTS game (for example) and you prefer FPS, what's the use of getting several invitations spread over a period of a couple of months? You won't suddenly like RTS above FPS, unless there is a solid reason... and then you propably can just search for the union and enter manually... most union are open towards new members that even can join themselves. So no problem with that. But it is a problem if you keep getting an invitation again and again and again, which you have to keep declining . A no is a NO! 2) unions all of a sudden like you VERY MUCH when union awards are being handed out. It's obvious that unions want to do their best, but their intentions contain a serious flaw... they just don't care about their members, they just care about an award and statistics... getting the most members, the highest level, the biggest influence, the biggest post count, etc. You name it, but when an award period starts popping up, you will notice it... you can't think of anything else then seeing leaders doing nothing else then sending a massive amount of invitations to the same people who probably already declined 2 weeks ago... (or even in a briefer time span then this) This denies the very purpose of an union altogether... it brings a whole lot of people together, but it basically doesn't improve the quality or the content of it... it's just numbers and awards. That isn't a union, it's a collection of people who don't offer any input. Solutions: - ignoring unions just like you can ignore users. If you don't like a certain union, it's valid to stop the invitations dead in their track. Now you have full control and can always change your mind later and have the tools in case you suddenly want to join. - users can only be invited through the Union Recruitment Board - insert a certain undisclosed period where unions can not invite anybody, which avoids the rush to get as many members for the awards

Well put there Dirk. Very Few Unions care about thier Members ALL (Or even most) of the time. I like the Ignoring Unions just like users the best IMO. The other two can do more harm then good with Unions such as GS Support ones. Over the months I just joined 30 Unions to stop the Invites however, now I may be missing out on good Unions due to users that always send me Invites. I'm glad you took the time to make this topic Dirk. You are getting my support all of the way with this.

Oh Dirk, add some kind of Poll for the users that may not want to post. Polls in topics help to get more feed back ;)

Instead of declining the invite PM, I just delete the message. That way I don't get messages from that union, and after a while, your "union list" will hit a peak (around 30) and you can't get any more messages. If you wanted to join a union that you never got an invite for, then you'd have to actually decline an invite then go and join that union you wanted to join. It's a simple solution right now, but hopefully there can be a fix to it later on.

And fastesttruck, I don't think a poll is necessary. If you want to get detailed opinions, then leave a poll out of it. Detailed opinions can only help the topic. A poll wouldn't be as useful. It just gets a number.

I'm behind this, defiantly.

And that, to me, sounds like the best way to remedy the situation.

there could be some sort of options in our profile union section, which will state our choice of union and interest or taste. May be we could just set some sort of flag or anything to get invitaions from perticular sorts of union. Suppose, i don't mind invitations form those union where RTS rules. So, I'll set my flag for RTS and just get invitations from unions related with RTS games. Also, when I decline any invitation, there will be no more invitation from that perticular union.

this is true that, every leader wants his union to be rewarded or be famous and ofcourse good activity on board and there is no harm for him to try untill he is satisfied. So, why not making some sort of rules and regulations for the union leader too. this might keep them onpure bindings.

there could also be divisions between unions. for example, a union having more than 1000 members is no match for a union with 100-200 members. GS could classify them in this way that from 3000-1500 class A, 1500-750 class B and so on. I don't know, but this might give the leaders or the officers a bit of relaxation about the awords or anything.

There could be more emblems for the union rather than some few which are currently not given anyway. This is one of the reasons, people get so much of invitation. because there are emblems for number of members a union has.

another thing what fastesttruck have said about the 30 unions limit: only because he wants to avoid invitations and he might be missing out his type of union. This is true. He can do that. I just decline them no matter how many times I get invited form the same union, I just wait for the right one.And why joining a union where we hardly visit. so, how about a system. if you don't visit a union for 2-4 weeks, you autometically get resigned. someone might say, what if i'm absent form GS. the answer is, if you are not not absentand active on other unions. I'm not sure about this idea yet...but i could come up with something better if GS wants.

there is so much to talk about union. but i just want to stop here cos I've heard that GS is upgrading its union systemand if GS needs feedback, i'll write a novel on union. :D Thanks for raising this point.

dev_ron only thing I don't like about your post and idea is the getting kicked if you don't vist the Union for a few weeks. most of the Members The Emblems Union, Zelda Union, Head Crab Union and so on are there for the PM news, not for the forum the Union has. That would get annoying having to re join a Union every month just to keep getting the PM's.

As I've said, I'm not sure about this one yet. Something better can be formulated. This was just a shade of an idea, which came to my mind while writing. just to give it a touch.. you know...

definitely for this, though personally i just leave the invites there and delete the PMS, that way i dnt get any more invites for a long time - basically up until the system seems to automatically delete them, and that tends to take a loong time..

I personally leave the invites there to fill up the 30 union limit. But this is a good idea, it would be a smart choice to implement some of it (mainly the ignore union feature) because it is true... some people just don't get the message when you repeatedly decline an invitation.

If anything an error message should appear when someone tries to invite a user that's already declined an invitation to join or something like that.

I got 7 invitations from 7 different unions in one day. All from the same user on my friendlist. That person isn't even the leader, they're just a recruit!
