What's the deal with the reviews?

I've noticed lately that gamespot reviews are coming in like a week later than every other reviewer. This saddens me because I read gamespot reviews as my most trusted source before I go out and purchase games. The other sites give too much fanboy service to their games so I can't depend on them for a good review.

At the same time I like to pick up games on the day of so it's a bit of a let down to find that I have paid 60 bucks for a game that turns out to be crap (my rental store here sucks so I have to buy)

Is there just a crazy influx of reviews right now or are the writers just taking their time? What's the deal?

Actually, it's been this way for as long as I can remember. Most games take a while to get reviewed here. But I don't mind the wait if it means more thorough and comprehensive reviews. You might want to take a look at this.

The article is 2 years old, but this might be one of the reasons:

"It is GameSpot's policy to not review a game unless the reviewer has completely finished its main storyline." :)

When there's a multiplayer component, GS will always wait until it can be played in 'real-world' conditions too. That usually plays a significant part on when such reviews are published, since those conditions can't usually be met until release day.

Critic reviews aren't meant to determine whether a game "$ucks" or "ownz", they're only there to help you make your mind up. Whether you think a game is good or bad, it is completely up to your opinion - you shouldn't follow review scores like strict laws.
