This is just a question that I've been wondering for a while now and it's time I ask. Why did gamespot feel the need to go with Lithium boards instead of vbulletin, ipb or some other board software? Is it easier on the server resources or am I missing something else?

Without talking to an admin first, the best name I can come up with is CBS Interactive Forum Software. In other words, it's something they built themselves.
