I've always liked cartridges more than CDs. Back when cartridges were the norm, every console had their own unique cartridge design and that helped each console stand out, where as CDs all look the same (at least in shape). Cartridges also allowed for more proper cover designs. It's a bit trickier to make a proper work of art on a donut canvas, although as many of the Dreamcast dating sims in my collection have shown, it can be done... it's just not done very often on these shores unfortunately. Also, cartridges on average had more weight, which I really liked. When I took out the Ocarina of Time cartridge for the first time, I didn't just know that there was an awesome huge adventure ahead of me, I could feel it. That cart was heavy, and I loved that. I often wish that cartridges could make a comeback, but alas, I know it will probably never be... ;[ So what does everyone here think about the two storage mediums? I'm not debating which one is technically superior, but rather, which medium's aesthetics do you prefer? (I must apologize if this has been done before, I have used the search feature and didn't find anything similar, but then, I do miss things sometimes..)

Well carts look much better when stacked on a shelf esp if they have their boxes. It just looks like I have more than I really do haha.

While I like the way the old Sega Genesis boxes looked, I prefer the DVD cases of the new systems, so I'd have to say CD.

Yeah, that's why I say CD as well. Also, they're easier for me to store, which is a plus.

it won't let me vote... I like carts because of how much harder they are to ruin. you drop a CD it can be perminently damaged... you drop a cart... nothing. you over-use a cd, it can be perminently ruined... you overuse a cart... it enjoys you.

I like CDs because they create longer games.

CDs are easier to move around in large numbers I guess, other than that I'll take carts any day. They just feel more real, and like wafle says, are pretty damn indestructable. Even if you are like me and are insanely protective of CDs/DVDs, one tiny scratch in the wrong place and you're buggered :(

Pros of carts / Cons of Discs

  1. No memory card required, you can move your game from one system to another without an accompanying memory card.
  2. Rugged. Hard to break unless you are going out of your way to try.
  3. "Feels" better. It just feels better to insert a cartridge.
  4. Limited load times, faster saves.
  5. Not susceptible to long-long term bit-rot like discs.

Cons of carts / Pros of Discs

  1. Battery replacement needed after long period of time / use.
  2. Limited storage (on carts made to date)
  3. For collectors harder to find complete games.

So based on the medium itself, and not the games that both media have carried, I'd have to go with carts. If you go by experience than discs win hands down (I've played and enjoyed more hours on disc based games than cart).

Since I'm more of an old-school gamer, I've always had a preference for Carts, but I can see the advantages to CDs as well

As far as the media itself, I prefer carts, as for storage, I like the CD, DVD, Blu-ray cases.

I like either or, as they both have pros and cons, but I lean towards carts as they are easier for me to fix with my technical knowhow. I've fixed many a cart/cartridge based systems, but disc games are much tricker.

I really gained an appreciation for the CD vs. carts debate when i first began dealing with Neo Geo CD vs. AES. i have never played an AES, but i hear that the quality and load times are much improved over the CD. I have just been downloading Neo Geo games on the Wii VC in order to avoid the load times. I can't bring myself to buy any more of the NGCD games because of their shortcomings.
