I think I enjoy collecting and acquiring video games more than actually playing them. I would say that a good chunk of games that I own are rarely played or have even been played. I used to have a lot more free time on my hand in which to play video games, but now a days that is limited. I get really excited when I find a good deal and get that much closer to the completion of a collection.

Which way do you lean?

It's hard to say. When I was younger, I was all about playing and I didn't take very good care of my games. Stupid cardboard boxes. These days I only spend time playing the releases I really love or that I'm reviewing. Sometimes I buy games just to have them in my collection because I know their history and their impact on gaming as a whole. Sort of the same way a historian would collect relics, or a movie fan would collect DVDs he isn't a huge fan of himself. I dunno. I think these days it's a mix of both for me.

I'd assume it is a little of both for most of us. That's how it is with me as well. Finding a good deal on great games rules, but so does playing those great games!

I'd say it's a 60/40 split for me. I spend more of my time hunting down games and trying to find good prices than i spend actually playing them, but not a hell of a lot more. What actually consumes more time than finding the games is organizing them, i have a fairly finite ammount of space to put my games, a good deal of my time goes towards figuring out how to arrange my games in a way that I can make the most of the space i have.

I don't have any time to play games either. Sometimes I feel stupid buying more games when I can't play the ones that I have, but then the collector comes out in me and I buy it anyway.

I really wish I had more time to play, I have some great games that I haven't spent any time with and I really want to get into those games.

I'm with you there. I used to be a big RPG fan, but I can't commit the time to work through one. I'll get part way through and then have to put the game down for a bit and then when I get to playing again I forget most of what I've already done. It's a bummer, because there are so many good RPG's I'd like to play through.

I'll mix a little of what was already said...

I have been gaming since the age of 2 and have never treated my games or things they came in like crap, hence why I still have everything. I didn't however used to seek "complete" games I used to just find the cheapest and only got new around XMAS and BDAY and occasionally easter but my biggest problem was renting.... I used to rent CONSTANTLY! back when games were 2 day rentals..... NES, SNES, GENESIS, VB I probabally wasted more money renting then buying..... which I think is why I started collecting instead.... but I like both eaqually the diffrence is I only play when I have time and time is hard to get between a social life and a job. unfourtunitly I lost my job and most of my social life at the same time (I won't say why on a board, it's personal and have nothing to do with eachother... just a bad coinsideance) but fortunitly I now have more gaming time, so I have been catching up on all those lesser played games that needed my attention. I wish I bought all those saturn games from TRU before they got shipped back to the company.... there were a dollar each.......

I did the calculation once. At my current rate of playing games, I have roughly 30 years worth of games to finish, provided I buy no more. I play a few hours here and there, but for me the time I spend on my gaming hobby is 90% acquiring and 10% playing. It started as the reverse. On some weekends I buy nothing and play for hours, but that is less common all the time.

Geez, I'd hate to do that math. I'd probably get old and die before finishing the games that I have. I've even got multiple versions of some games, but only the ones I buy for both gaming and collecting purposes. The most examples are Mortal Kombat Deception and Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks. I don't know what it is about this series, but I've got every version on every console, and I've either completed every one, or am in the process of doing so.

Mortal Kombat was never a well liked game from my perspective, it just never sat well with me. Certain other games ... like Castlevania and Ikaruga i own on multiple platforms. For instance i have three copies of Symphony of the night, greatest, adn non greatest hits versions for playstation and the imported saturn version, Ikaruga is another one i own on two platforms.

Of my 1273 games, only 1151 have been opened or have a definite end. I've only finished 110 of those, which is a paltry 10.47%. I've got several nearly completed, and I should get those off my docket.

What i usually do is start a game, and try to play it through till i finish it. Ie. One console rpg at a time, currently i have to finish getting my jollies out of FF9 before i decide to start another for anyother console ... except maybe handhelds. I've got it documented howmany games i've completed ... some where i think the number is pretty low ... somewhere around 20.

Yea, as a kid i never beat very many games, and i always took my time about it too. Forinstance when i was playing Dragon Warrior a lot i'd spend entire days just wandering aroun dkilling things because i couldn't remember what i was supposed to do. By the time i got to the dragon lord i was powerful enough to kill him using the flame sword as opposed to Erics sword ... which i couldn't remember how to find. By the way, the flame sword dose like +20 dmg, erics sword's stats are some where around +43 ... the way the game works, you're *supposed* to need Erics Sword to kill the Dragon Lord.

At least you're not a big Atari collector. Very few of the early games had definite ends, some of them were more like contests to see who can pay attention to the game the longest.

I think the better question is how many people actually got to the end of ET or atleast made decent progress? When i played the game i was completly lost ... and wondered why the hell ET could fly by stretching his neck.

I know a lot of people who call ET "the straw that broke the camels back" when the Atari era crashed. I don't blame them either, if you get a cartrige only copy of the game it's a breath short of being f'ing impossible to figure out.

it wasn't even close to where 2600 was going down..... not to mention 7800 stayed and faught with INTV for a while...... NES blew them all out though
