Ok so we all know what a gaming generation is, for instance this generation holds the PS3, Xbox360, Nintendo Wii, DS and PSP. Next generation will be liike the PS4, Xbox720 ect. Well will you personnaly keep upgrading, or will there be a time when you just don't btoher and just stop at a generation and only look back, not forward.

I think this is probbaly my last generation, Metal Gear Solid has finished and the only other series I'd get a console for is Ratchet and Clank, but I'll probbaly stop here. You see instead of looking forward I'll look backwards and get games for my older consoles such as PS1 and GB.

i think you should reconsider that thought. personally, other than rpgs, the generations after snes haven't aged well because they were trying to capture realism.thats just my opinion

as far as for me, besides the missing n64,snes,genesis games and consoles, i'm looking forward. there is nothing else i really want from the previous generations. i'm going to look forward. almost every current gen console i played i feel like it could easily be one of the greatest games ever made. when they produce cg quality movies (mgs4 is really close) is prolly the last gen i'll stop at...

Well put, Jolly. If there isn't a "must have" game, I don't want the system. Hence my not having Wii or PS3 yet. Nothing that I'm dying so much to play that I can't wait.

The way I see it, there are hundreds apon Hundreds of games that are already out, and have been for ages. So untill i get all of them, i see no point going forward. As they say, there is no point building an upstairs to a house if the downstairs is incomplete.

If you want to expand your focus on past games, that great, but you can do that while continuing to play new games as well.

i don't think this applies to that saying. people enjoy the games regardless if they never played a 2600 game or final fantasy 7.

you can actually do both however...most past games are inexpensive

This reminds me of a quote from the silent film era.

"Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?" -- H. M. Warner, Warner Brothers, 1927.

I think that "keep going" is my answer.

At the start of this generation I felt burnt by the two previous consoles from one of the companies and was damned if I was going to reward the arrogance of one of the others, so I was going to be content to ride through this generation with just my console of choice and pick up only games I wanted to play.

Yeah. Until the other two consoles came out and now I love all three of them and want almost every game I see in the magazines. (When I say I love all three of them, that's kind of a streatch, each of them have their downside, but they each have enough good games that I love).

So, yeah, I just don't see a way I'd stop wanting to play new games. Now collecting for the 8th gen? That is, buying games I know have value but I don't personally want to play... I'll have to think about that.

Every generation I've said that I'm going to quit and be happy with what I have and somehow that never happens. It's been getting much easier as my backlog builds up though. This timee only console that I got on launch day was the Wii. The rest waited well over a year for price drops to kick in. I've also scaled back my collecting and stuck mostly to games that I actually want to play.

Right, but hundreds and hundreds of those games blow. When it comes down to it, most consoles have 100 or less games to own. I can think of quite a few consoles with 3 or so, such as gamecom or 3do in my mighty opinion.

Keep going of course! That is part of the excitement of this hobby. As a gamer, how could you not be excited about new games that continue to come out? There will always be plenty of old games that you missed out on the first time around.. but that does not mean skipping out on all the great stuff that is right around the corner! This is a no-brainer.)

I can't see myself stopping. If a console appeals to me, I'll probably get it... eventually. I've tended to come to each generation quite late - I didn't have a 360 until last November-ish, and I didn't get a PS2 until it had been out a good 3 years. It gives me time to get a good feel for the game selection out there: if there's only a small handful of games I want then I won't bother with the console. Example: both the PS3 and Wii have some mighty convincing to do before I'll fork over.

Likewise, each new console release - PS4, X720 (crap name), whatever - will have to convince me on its own merits.

I'm a huge fan of games so as long as all 3 companies keep churning out new consoles, I will continue to fund this hobby, as expensive as it be. Normally I'm pretty late when it comes to adopting new consoles which is a good thing cuz usually with revised hardware comes more efficient and more cost-effective hardware.

Hang on, as a collection of collectors many of whom collect just because, the natural reaction would be "Go forward!". But, buying the newest titles can get expensive so in the interm while waiting for the the current (and future) titles to age a bit and drop in price, why not go back in time?

If your goal with collecting is simply to collect the games you want to play, why not hold off on buying the lastest and greatest and get more for my dollar (or pound, or Euro or whatever)? I went nuts for a while buying new titles right when they first came out, and then they would sit until I finally got around to playing them and by that time I could easily buy them for half of my original purchase price.

I'm not saying I'm totally swearing off anything new, for some things I will buy day 1, but I'm planning on seriously scaling back my day 1 purchases. I bought Blue Dragon day 1. About a month ago I started actually playing it. I could've easily saved myself $40 by simply waiting until I was ready to play it. Oh well, lesson learned.

So I would say "Go forward", but you don't have to be there on day 1.

I never ever EVER buy things on Day 1. I consider it a waste of good money. The only exceptions to this rule are the Phoenix Wright games.

But to stay on topic, I may quit actively collecting sometime in the next few years. If my wife can't get into gaming and it becomes the kind of thing that's like a personal vice, then I can't in good consience continue with it. Playing the legions of games I already have is one thing, buying new games that I don't play constantly is another.

I don't see myself stopping anytime soon. However ...

The only thing that gives me any cause to stop collecting is if console gaming continues on it's current trend of firmware updates, game patches, and DLC. I know it's not a big deal to some (or most) people, but it really truly bothers me.

I like being able to pop a game in and just have it work.

I don't want to have to install it, download patches, buy and download additional content that should have been on the media in the first place, etc. I don't want to have to worry about updating console firmware and having that break my system, loose my save games or what have you.

I don't like the trend of games coming out really buggy and developers just "fixing" it with a patch later on. I still have my NES, and although I don't play it on a daily basis, I most likely will again sometime. Think about whats going to happen twenty years from now when you want to play a game and a patch isn't readily available anymore, or your DRM DLC gets lost, or ... whatever. It just puts me off, almost to the point of just not wanting to deal with it at all.

I actually like patching up my games. But that's probably because I'm as much of a PC gamer as a console gamer so its something I've been used to since I got my first PC.

Man, if this thread wasn't in a gaming related forum, the title would be carrying a far different implication, if you catch my drift. *wink*

I'll probably keep going for the next two generations, I might stop when I'm 30 or something like that, I don't like this whole downloading patches thing, I prefer inserting the game into the system, and since this is a tred this generation, next generation might rely on it.

and I think I'll always be forced to move forward since I only buy games on sale and since 2007 Gamcube games are going extinct, and if I wanted to stop with the Wii that would be impossible since I'd have to stop being a gamer, Right now I have a Wii and next year or the year after that I'm getting a 360 and I'll keep buying games for it, or maybe Sony is planing to have the PS3 live off for 10 years if that happens than I'd have about 50 PS3 when it dies off, I mean I don't know how to explain it I'll just keep going on since they're are always something I want.

See, I always think it's funny when I see people post things like, "oh maybe when I'm older I'll stop playing video games". If you play now why would you stop when you get older? I'm 37 and at this point I don't think I'll be stopping anytime soon. I saw a demographic of gamers ages and was surprised to find that there are more gamers over 25 than under. The 80s video game generation has all grown up now and we're still gaming!

That's exactly right. I'm 36 and I see no reason to stop playing video games. Why would I want to? That's like saying when I get to age 40 I am going to stop watching movies.

I totally understood, but I still don't see why it has to be mutually exclusive. Why can't you do both? I recently expanded my console library with a Genesis and PSone. I intend to obtain more games for them while continuing to buy new games for more recent systems.

Keep going.

I like getting the latest system that comes out. It's the video game junkie in me.

As far as cost goes, there are plenty of games I'd like to add to my collection that cost just as much and way more than a 360 game or a console. Some day I will own you "Peek a boo Poker", "Hot Slots", and "Bubble Bath Babes".

I'm not into collecting the whole library in the new systems as much, but I do buy specific titles that are fun, or challenging, or that all my friends are playing. It's going to take me some time to build up those old collections and not many of my local friends play the old stuff. So in the mean time, bring on the new stuff...as long as its good.

Indeed. I should think it's obvious. Back in the days of the NES and SNES gaming was seen as exclusively for kids. Now it's almost entirely focused towards late teens and adults. Other than a few exceptions of course, namely 95% of Wii games. But even the really casual stuff is broadening horizons further, actively appealing towards gamers of all ages and both sexes (albeit in a horribly stereotyped way: I'm a woman and therefore must require regular doses of shoes and ponies to function).
