Not a big Madden fan myself. I prefer Midway's Blitz franchise.

But I was reading in the Digital Press Collector's Guide how Madden 64, the first football game for the 64, lacked NFL licencing.

How can this be?

I don't have this game, but figure it is collectible on the basis that it is a Madden NFL game without NFL licensing.  Anyone have it?

Okay, I found the answer to this piece of trivia. I was reading the May 1998 issue of EGM and apparently Acclaim had exclusivity on team names and logos for one year - thus Madden was teamless.

A team-sports game with no teams... now that's a novel concept. Every player for themselves!!!

That's pretty funny. Hang onto that one, it's a collectible.

Hmm... yeah, not even Mario so much. But that does help somewhat. As a kid (and still today) I've had absolutely zero interest in sports; I didn't play them, didn't watch them on T.V., and never even bothered to learn all the rules. (I know the basics, but I'm clueless about anything more complicated than a foul ball, touchdown, or 3-point shot.) I only have very few of the Mario baseball, tennis, or whatever games; and most of those I only have 'cause I found them very cheap. So yeah, Mario sport games are alright, but I'd probably pick any other non-sports game over one of those if I had to.

I tend to agree with you...
