I'm looking to purchase a Sega Genesis & a NES in the near future.  After a recent trip, to the local vintage games & music store, I walked out with copies of Castlevania 3, Golden Axe, & Castlevania Bloodlines, only with no system to play them on (not to mention the copy of Beggar Prince I've had).  What would everyone here recommend to look out for when attempting to purchase one of these systems?  I don't want to buy something that everyone knows is defective or has some common problem that isn't immediately apparent.  Is it worth it to try and get a specific model/serial number of either system?

While I can't give much info on a NES, I can on a Genesis. The great thing about Genesis systems, that every version, 1, 2 and 3, are highly durable. I've seen many a one, and have never encountered a defective one yet. The best thing of all, is you can nab the 1st and second versions of the Genesis very cheaply, with lots of accessories too. Now if, by some chance you get a chance to get a Sega Genesis 3, those are very valuable. Why? They were made without any region protection chips. They can play any Genesis game from any country :p I once had a complete version brand new in the box. You cna nab some nice setups cheaply off Ebay or even from your local Flea markets. They tend to be awesome grounds for Genesis games, accessories and systems. ;) I have a post somewhere in the union of a great Genesis (and Sega Master System) finding I found once.

Then I'll take the NES part...

I recommend trying to get the NES version 2.  It's a toploading system that doesn't have the flashing problems that the original toaster-loaders did.  Granted, it doesn't have AV capability (it only uses the RF adapter), but I'll trade a minimal upgrade in picture/sound for the ability to get a game loaded without having to do strange (and often harmful) things to the system and/or cart.  The toploader is much smaller than the original NES, which also makes it attractive for the space-impaired.  One other drawback...it is generally significantly more expensive and difficult to find.  You can always try to steal one off of ebay, which is how I got mine.

Both responses ring true. For me, I have the first two Genesis models and they are like tanks. One of them has been through hell and I don't have a problem with it at all.

On the NES side you may consider a legal clone to avoid any problems. I have two old school NESs', both of which have been professionally restored and I still had problems with them, so now I keep them for looks but for gaming I use a NES clone like Generation NEX's Messiah: (click image for site).

If this device works well, then it is an excellent suggestion.  It's cheaper than you'll probably find a Nintendo toploader, and it has AV functionality.  If you're not looking for official products, this looks like the way to go.

Nice, I think I'll be getting one of these now.

The Generation NEX Messiah does work - 90-95% of the games are compatible - Light gun does work with it.  So do the old controllers.  It also allows for Famicom games.  Does not translate the Japanese for you.

If you can find a Sega Nomad, it is a portable system that can also be attached and run through your TV with appropriate AV cables.  It does have a connection for a second player as well.  (Battery eating little varmint, but it can be run on AC - plug in as well)

Good Luck -

I've always thought that the 2nd-player controller port and the A/V out were strokes of genius.

I would recommend getting either the 1st or 2nd model Genesis if you are interested in having access to Sega CD or 32X games, otherwise the import-friendliness of Model 3 is attractive. I have a number of Japanese Megadrive games, and those published before a cutoff in 1992 don't use a hardware lockout other than the cartridge slot shape. Carts made later look for a reference voltage indicating the console region, and installing a switch to dupe the game is not so tough (I'm told).

Personally, I would try to get a JVC X'Eye over any of the rest of the mentioned Genesis hardware, since it has a Sega CD built in, looks nicer than Model 1, 2, or 3, and has a very nice A/V output suite. Region modding it isn't that hard (I've done that one myself) and the cartridge slot is a rectangle, so you won't have any Megadrive cart shape issues. If you mod, you still won't be able to play Mega CDs, though. The X'Eye is even compatible with the 32X and the Power Base Converter, as long as you remove the shell. The only issue that I have encountered with the X'Eye is that you cannot save in Beggar Prince with it, as with any Sega CD-connected Genesis. The difference is that the others can be reversibly turned back into Genesis-only consoles.

I've seen a third party NES clone at a games store in Tallahassee (Games4Less).  I think they were selling 'em for like $45.  I considered getting one several times, but since my real NES still works fine, I couldn't justify it.  I can't remember the name of the thing, or who made it but it didn't look anywhere near as cool as that Messiah system.  It just looked like a little blue box (top loaded the games) and was about as big as two stacked NES carts.  I've been thinking about getting that Messiah system more and more lately though.  Just cause it looks so awesome.  :P

As someone who has bought an NES off eBay, I support the idea of buying either the top loader or a later clone. I had to take the thing apart and perform minor surgery to get it to work, which is something a "working" console should not have required.

I picked up a third party NES at eStarland.com last year. It maybe what Inkwolf is referring to. I haven't had any problems with mine. Silver/BlackWhite/RedIndigo/White

Thanks for the input everyone. I knew this was the right place to ask! :D

I'm thinking about the generation 2 Genesis. I've cut out the X'Eye due to the Beggar Prince issues and the Nomad as I think I may start getting some of the Sega CD games I just lusted over when they originally were released.

I've also cut out the Generation NEX as it's listed as incompatible with Castlevania 3 & research seems like the FC Game Console listed at eStarland has the same problem as well. Am I doomed to fight with a Nintendo NES just to play Castlevania 3? Does anyone have any experience with this game on any of these clone systems? Does anyone know if the version 2 NES is incompatible as well?

I know nothing of the clones, but the NES toploader works just fine with Castlevania III and the Zapper and the Power Pad and the...you get the point.

Anyone have any information on the FC Twin? $50 for a system that plays both NES and SNES games seems like a good deal to me. Anyone familiar with this system?

They don't work with Castlevania 3!?  Ugh, that's lame.  Castlevania 3 is such an awesome game.  First appearance of Alucard if I'm not mistaken.

Now that's pretty sweet!  If it works of course.

My suggestion with the Genesis is to buy an ebay lot with the Gen/SegaCD./32x and some games. Ive bid on a few of these lots but always have been outbid, but thats because I really have been trying to get them for virtually nothing. You could get the whole lot for the $100 range often, so if you feel like dropping the cash, its usually the most cost effective way of getting all the stuff. Also, You may want to look for the sega mastersystem adapter so you can play all sega pre-saturn games in one unit. Thats your call. I picked up a used Gen1 for $20 at a mom-n-pop recently.

For the NES, Id probably recommend the Play Messiah NEX (or whatever the are called). However, I myself would get the toaster version since that is what I grew up on and what I still use to this day. I have a NES system cleaner which all but eliminates all blinking and also can be used to clean other systems and games. Another interesting product you may want to consider is that there is a 3rd party NES/SNES combo.
