I personally look for the consoles that I grew up with or missed out one while growing up and the definitive games for each one. I get a lot of extra games by purchasing big lots on ebay, but won't buy anything if it doesn't have a good percentage of titles that I really want. I enjoy puzzlers, video pinball, side scrolling shooters, action, adventure, platformers, rhythm games, and just about anything quirky that would drive the average casual gamer to the brink of insanity. I mostly avoid sports sims, FPS, tactical shooters, anything involving stealth game play. While there is some filler that I wouldn't mind cutting from my collection most of the titles were carefully chosen. What about you? What do you collect and why do you do it?

My philosophy on game collecting is that I do not want to miss out on any title that I would enjoy.  The almost-reality is that I would be better off buying games when they go over $70 on Ebay and only those, but then I would miss out on the hundreds of quality experiences that come from lesser know games.

I would also like to cut about 200 titles from my collection but there is no worthwhile reason to try, including money.

I started buying every game because I rented alot in the SNES/Gen era and realized it more frugal to just buy games out of bins at Funcoland... (R.I.P.) now I pick up anything and everything to get the enjoyment from it and maybe a little bit to fill the void in my soul...

I enjoy puzzlers, video pinball, side scrolling shooters, action, adventure, platformers, Beat em' ups, Turn-Based Tactic RPGs and just about anything quirky that would drive the average casual gamer to the brink of insanity. I mostly avoid sports sims, FPS, tactical shooters, anything involving stealth game play, anything that the majority of people have and rythem games. While there is some filler in my collection most of the titles were carefully chosen.

I collect games for a number of reasons. I usually buy games that are noteworthy in some way: they have great gameplay, are in a genre or series I typically enjoy, are rare, valuable, controversial, etc. Often, I find games or lots that both add a lot of titles to my collection and that are cheap enough that I can turn some or all of them around at a profit or for store credit, to lower the net cost of the things I really want. Condition matters to me, b/c of my history with comic collecting and b/c I'm generally a nitpicky guy.

My philosophy isn't "grab everything", though there are so many games already on my want list with more being added weekly, that it sometimes seems like it. I would eventually like to have every U.S. console, most import consoles and most handhelds, but I have no plans to get every game on every platform like some of the lunatics on the Digital Press forums do. I saw a post over there last week where the poster's signature said that he had complete collections for something like 20 consoles, among them was the NES. I would like to get every U.S. Sega Master System game, b/c it's one of my favorites and I'm fairly close to that goal. By and large, though, the good and great titles aren't in the majority on any system, even those I look at fondly.  I am a fan of getting every game from particular publishers or developers on a system, like every Atlus game on the PS1 or every KOEI game on the Genesis.

I rarely sell games that I have only a single copy of, but I will from time to time. If a game is just irredeemable garbage in my eyes, I won't keep it for long. The thing is that I now play so infrequently and so little, that it takes me a while to make that judgment. Game collecting for me is both a hobby and a potential livelihood. I've thought of opening a store for a long time, or perhaps a flea market booth. I have traded away a lot of my nicer doubles backstock for newer games, but I've decided to stop doing that. Secret of Mana is a nice trade-in for $20 in store credit when you've got $5 in it, but it would be a lot nicer to sell it at market price myself for $30-40 in real dollars.

I have thought a great deal about the future of my collecting and whether I will want to continue or be able to continue indefinitely. I don't know, but as I've mentioned before, there's going to be a big triage when I hit 2500, which is going to be pretty soon, since I'm at 2382 as of tonight. If this year follows the pattern of last year, I could end up with 2500 by the end of 2006. Last year I left Christmas with ~130 games, a system, and a pile of strategy guides and peripherals. Most likely that's not going to repeat, but you never know. I have seen a lot of good retro games popping up at pawn shops in my town, and if it's a widespread phenomenon, I may have a busy break.

I didn't really become a collector until I made a really bad trade and horribly regretted it almost immediately.  I'd love to say that there's some profound reason that I do it.  But the best I can come up with is that I don't want to give up anything that I might want to play down the road.  I'm giving my sister my copy of Intelligent Qube for Christmas and it's like pulling teeth.  I really don't want to give it up, but it's the holidays, she really wants that game (has for a long time), and 'tis better to give than receive.

I'm not a very particular collector either.  A lot of people are concerned with the condition and completeness of their games.  I'm only like that with disc-based games.  If it's a cart, I don't need the box or manual.  As long as it works, I'm happy.  It sits on the shelf waiting for the call that will eventually come.

As for my acquisition habits...I'll play anything once.  And since I've gotten to the point where I hate going into rental stores, I just buy a game that looks like it might be interesting.  I also seem to gravitate toward the odd (ie Circus Maximus) and the cheap (Geist for $5 is a good example).

I've really tried to cut back on my game buying in order to rebuild my gaming setup, since I'm considering going to a two tv rig.  Unfortunately I live within an hour of two Sears stores and they always have stuff ridiculously cheap, which I buy whether I'm interested or not.

There's really no rhyme or reason to my collecting habits...I guess I'm the ultimate impulse buyer if you want to boil it down.

My philosopy is "It either be really good or really cheap.". There are so many great, cheap games that I dont have, I cant justify paying anything close to MSRP for anything that I dont expect to be outstanding and will get my immediate attention. The only two console games I bought at MSRP this year (as far as I can remember) is Okami and FFXII. I also will buy games that I do want but will have a hard time getting later or that their is some reason that it is beneficial to get it asap- Castlevania POR, I wanted the preorder bonus (Note above I said Ive only purchased 2 "console games" at MSRP, DS games tend to be harder to find used and complete).

I also will very very very rarely buy a disk-based console game without at least the box being in decent shape. In fact the only current gen game I have without the box is soul reaver 2. Older, cartrige, games I could care less if they have the box, except for Genesis games.

I generally only collect games that I really think I would play given the time. Realistically there's no way I'll ever play through my entire collection but even so, I dont' think I would pickup something that I don't think I would enjoy. My collection was 100% PC games until a few years ago when I got a GC and PS2. Since then I've been going back and picking up many of the good titles from each of those consoles, as well as Xbox, 360, DS and PSP (as I have acquired those consoles since I got the PS2). I'm pretty strict about what I allow in my collection from a console standpoint, I have to have a complete package for me to purchase, and I stay away from Greatest Hits, Player's Choice, or Platinum versions cause I'm really wierd about that. I like my collection to look uniform on my shelf so I stick to the original release packaging. Older PC titles I usually just keep the CD cases and manuals, newer PC titles have moved to using the 'double-wide' DVD case so I obviously keep the title in that package again, only collecting games that I realistically think that I would play. I also collect strategy guides, but I usually limit myself to to strat guides for RPGs, unless the strat guide for a FPS or RTS title is really good. I am planning to go further back soon an begin expanding my collection to include some of the games I used to play on older consoles (Genesis, 64, SNES, NES, Atari 5200, and 2600).

I'm not a collector for value (though, I do like to keep things as mint and complete as possible). I collect games to play them. If it's not a game I will play, I won't get it, no matter how uber awesome of a collectors piece it may be. It just seems pointless to me, really, because you don't really get to enjoy the game.

I'm in it to collect the games that interest me for the consoles I like.  That's why my collection is both relatively small and specialised.

I buy only stuff that I could, at some point, see myself playing.  I know I'll never get to them all.  I usually only by complete stuff in good condition.  I'm a weirdo about stuff being perfect.  I don't plan on selling any of it, but I do like knowing that I could probably get $125-150 for the sealed copy of Tactics Ogre that I have.  I will only buy one copy of a game usually, unless I see it dirt cheap.  What I most like doing is searching for good/rare games on clearance.  To me thats the most fun part of collecting.  The only problem with being a bargain hunter is my inability to pay full price for games anymore.  My mind won't let me.

You aren't the only one...  I'm betting that you can get maore than $150 for that one.  Since sealed Suikoden II's sell for $250, I'm certain that you could get $200 for it.

Sigh... me too.  I knew about the game since it's release but only realized that I'd like to actually play it after it became a "really-expensive-even-for-used-copies" game.  Same with MvC2 (I only have PS2, no XBox or DC).  Although I really don't know why I waited so long to buy MvC2; I was playing that in the arcades from day one.  Waiting on that one is probably one of the stupidest things I've done as far as game buying goes.

I've tried to find it since I learned about it (a year after it's release) as for MvC2, I didn't get a dreamcast till it was too late... I had the PS2 one pre-ordered and recently picked up the XBOX one...

I'm like a lot of others here in that I usually only get games I'd want to play, but I do have some of that urge at times to get games for collectings sake. An example of the latter is my preorder of Ar tonelico. A lot of RPGs are interesting to me because of the art and characters in them.

I found that copy of Tactics Ogre at a Gamestop for $35.  Someone had traded it in with a bunch of other sealed games.  I must have been the first person to see them and I bought pretty much everything they had.  I'll post the lot sometime.  I felt like I was stealing.

Only $35?!  How long ago was this?  It couldn't be too recent; I doubt Gamestop would let it go for that cheap!  If I saw TO, sealed, at that price somewhere, I would contain my excitement as best possible, purchase the game, and then do backflips as I left the store.

The last used copy that I bought was $40 to $50 (I can't remember) at Rhino, and I swapped manuals with my not-quite-as-nice copy and sold it to a friend of mine for what I had in it.  $35 for a sealed copy would be quite nice.
