Simple enough. Once there are enough responses I'll put up a graph.

Basically, which system did you start gaming on,and as a follow up how has it influenced your collecting (if at all).

Excluding the arcade, mine was the Atari 2600. It greatly influenced my collecting, in fact my most recent purchase, yesterday, was the last game I needed to recon from the games I played as a kid.

It would be the Atari 2600. My dad used to have a huge collection of Atari Carts in this big giant box. It';s because of him and my mom, I got into game playing and eventually collecting. His second system was the Nes that later became mine, in which I once had a huge collection of games for too.

Ironically though, the Atari and Nes are two system I don't really collect games for now. xD

For me, it all began when my parents plopped their hyperactive, almost three-year-old son with a penchant for pushing any button within reach in front of an Atari 2600 and a copy of Target Fun in the hopes that it would keep him occupied while they welcomed his baby sister into the world. It worked, but they created the monster that I am today.

As for how it influenced my collecting...I spent a couple years reobtaining the games I played as a child. I now have all of them and then some. I still break out Dragonfire about once a month just to mess around with it.

If Wafle is gonna go to the Apple ][, then so shall I. I remember playing games on one of those back in kindergarden. The one game I played the most and will never forget is Rocky's Boots. I suppose it was more "edutainment" than game, but boy was it awesome. I guess it kind of got me started on my path of becomming a computer programmer.

But if you wanna stick to stuff I played at home, specifically consoles, it would be the Colecovision. When my cousins got a NES, we inherited their Colecovision and all the games they had (which if you look in my GS game collection, is all the CVIS and 2600 games I still own to this day).

Istarted on the 2600 like many of ther other dinosaurs around here. I was too dumb to hang on to that collection though so I've been rebuilding it recently. Beany Bopper (2600) and Frogs And Flies (2600) you will be mine again!

I know this is kinda lame, but the first system I got was a PS2. I had been a PC only gamer for a while, mostly because my parent's didn't like the idea of getting a console. They finally gave in and got me a PS2 in 2002, and since then I have transitioned almost entirely over to consoles. I have a lot of PS2 games and will continue to get them because I can play them on my 60 gig PS3. (The PS2 I can't take with me when I move out, because it is the family system).

As far as infulence, I really didn't start collecting until fairly reciently. I am a gamer who gets bored really easily and likes lots of variety, so I have a lot of games. When I hit over 200 games, I knew I was becoming less of an easily destracted gamer and more of a collector, so I have been collecting since. I'm not a pure collector like most of you, because I play all of my games and do trade in on occasion, but I do see myself as a collector.

Started on the NES probably, at least at home on a regular basis. I did play some 2600, but it was a couple years before my time and being so young, the NES had more child friendly games with better graphics. Where as I did have both, the NES fills all my early chilhood memories!

Not lame. I'm actually amazed by how many people started with the NES or Atari. I was expecting a lot more 16 bit and even PS1 responses.

I had Pong when the Atari first came out when I was a kid. Then we had an Atari 2600. Fast forward to the year 2002 when I got my Xbox and GBA. The Xbox was the first real console that I owned. I never had an NES, N64, PS1, Sega, or any other video game system between the Atari 2600 and the Xbox. Maybe that is why I collect now..I am making up for lost time and discovering all the games I missed! :D

Actually, the PS1 is where I really started thinking of myself as a collector. Granted I had a GameBoy several years prior, but I never really had enough games or took well enough care of what I had to consider myself a collector. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete was one of my first PS1 games and it was then that I really started to consider collecting. The package was so nice I wanted it to last forever. That feeling spread to non-colector's edition games and before I knew it, I started amassing more games than my friends; a colletion.

Atari 2600. My first memory is of me playing Pac-Man and Space Invaders (Which I still own to this day)

It hasn't really influenced my collecting though, that honor goes to DC & DS. The Dreamcast featured many unique games which won't be seen on another system again and the DS gave us all a new way to play games. If it wasn't for the DS coming out, even if it came out a year later, there's a good chance I'd have thrown in the gaming towel! o_0

The NES definately. That was a good Christmas. My brother got it as a present when I was 4 or 5 (actually quite late in the NES lifespan, come to think of it) and for years that's all we had (aside from computers, but I didn't do much PC gaming till a bit later). We also had a Commodore Plus/4 that I loved, but was temperamental to say the least.

Even before that, my brother and I used to play on our neighbour's NES. His parents had actually been told to buy one by a doctor, cos this kid had some sort of neurological disorder and playing video games actually helped his co-ordination a great deal. My brother only started begging my parents for a games console after we made friends with this kid...

Anyway, I'd say the NES has influenced my collecting a great deal. I went through a phase about five or six years back where all I bought was NES stuff from carboots and off eBay and Yahoo auctions (remember that?). I think it's safe to say I wouldn't be as much of a collector if I hadn't gone through that. I'm still a retro geek at heart.

Pickle mentioned starting on PS2. That's not uncommon, really. I know plenty of big gamers whose first console was a PS1 or 2. It's not that they didn't play games before that, but when you think about the sheer numbers of PlayStations sold it's pretty safe to say they brought a heck of a lot more players into the fold.

Kinda like the NES did way back when, more so in America but still a huge influence everywhere. Even though the NES and SNES didn't do as well over here in terms of numbers as the Sega consoles (Master System and MegaDrive/Genesis), it's surprising how most people I know and talk to about this stuff point to the Nintendo consoles as being the ones to turn them into big gamers, or the PS1/2 if they started gaming later.

This really depends on what you mean by start:

The first home system I gamed on was probably the Commadore VC-20. I remember getting my dad's computer magazine's and in the back they had programs you key into your Commadore that ended up being a letter P that had to jump over the O's rolling across the screen or something like that. Either that or a Kaypro, I don't really remember which one was first.

I was also a huge Arcade gamer back in the day. Pretty much every Saturday my friends and I would ride our bikes down to the local mini-golf/arcade to play video games. Needless to say, that when the movie Tron was released, I thought it was the greatest movie ever made.

The first home console my family owned was the Atari 5200. We had Pac-Man, Super Breakout, Miner 2049, and Frogger (at least that I remember)

Fast forward to my college days, and I played much NES, Metriod speed runs FTW!

As far as collecting goes, I really started that with PC games. I have almost 400 PC games.

Console collecting for me started really late. I bought my first console (meaning one that I personally owned as opposed to the 'family console' of my youth) when the PS2 slim first hit retail. Bought it the day it game out. Since then, I've added an Xbox, Gamecube, DS, PSP, 360, PS3, Wii, and N64 (SNES is probably going to be the next console I get, either that or Sega Genesis)

So that's about it.

I've been gaming as long as I can remember, so that's a hard one. I'd say SNES, Genesis, and N64. None of them really influenced my gaming that much (my collection is pitiful, so I'm going with gaming instead), but Melee did. I got curious as to where the hell Marth and Roy came from, played some Fire Emblem, and became a JRPG lover.

This is definitely not an easy question to answer.

I started so many things with video games...

first system i remember playing? Intellivision.

First system i owned: Atari 7800

First system I felt social with, had friends compare game scores and come over to play: NES

First system I felt competitive with: SNES (SFII man, hours... Chun Li is still my girl)

First system I felt I owned but didnt need: Genesis/Megadrive

First system I got that was older but I didnt care: Dreamcast

First System i HAD to have at release: Xbox 360

First system I bought twice: PS2

First system that got me laid: PS1

First system that got me married: NES

First system that KEPT me married: Xbox 360 (specifically, Gears of War, it honestly saved my marriage. ask me sometime)

So yeah, i guess the question is, start WHAT on?

ok. the PS1 got me laid back in like 97, because i brought a copy of FF7 (ugh i know, what a fanboy, right?) to band camp with me. yeah thats right, band camp. This one girl, Cherice, was 3rd chair Flute. she loved that game, and ended up spending so much time in MY room that eventually, she spent time in my bunk...ooohhh yeah, cue porno muzak.

The night i met my wife, we were hammered drunk. we got a ride from my even more enebriated rfiend ( a bad choice i know, but it turned out ok) back to my apartment. She saw that I had several older consoles and remarked something to the delicate notion of "duckhunt! man i **** loved that game!" so i of course fired it up, and she kicked my ASS at it. like seriously, and I'm pretty damned good at it. the next day (oh yeah, cue porno muzak) she didnt leave, and never did leave. she moved in like 2 weeks later mroe or less, and we wre married about a month and a half later.

After a rough patch in our marriage, which is none of any of your business (oh yeah cue porno muzak), there was this kinda general malaise about the apartment. we werent talking, everything was kinda just blah. Well a friend recommended Gears of War to me. I didnt care for it but when i played it online i fell in love with it. I wanted to give the single player a runthrough, and offered Jen the Dom seat while I rode Marcus. By the end of the game we were talking, laughing, having fun like the old days, and honestly, its been the same ever since.

hooray for games.

great responses. ha! Sanc, I'm glad Wafle got you to elaborate.

I started on the atari 2600, and it influenced my collecting, as stated above. But I have the Original Game Boy (OGB) to thank for getting me back into console gaming. I was in the 386/486 era of PC gaming wilderness for quite some time.

I think it was the N64 and Dreamcast that actually got me into collecting though. That's when I got rabid about hunting down games, about looking at every new release, and it was during the Dreamcast days where I strarted looking at games to buy that I did not want to play, but wanted to add to my collection (in addition to the great majority of games I bought because I did want to play them).

nowadays chances are the only people you'd impress with FF7 most likely already have bought/made their own Aeris outfit.

My first system was none other than an NES for Christmas of 1989. It probably hasn't really influenced my collecting; since there are a lot of crap games for it I have little desire to own them all. Of course, that hasn't stopped me from buying a bunch of $1 games, but still... It's the Nintendo 64 that made me want to be a collector... or maybe it was technically the GameCube. I was disappointed in the GameCube, Nintendo's offerings on it seemed half-hearted at best, with numerous games being rushed to the market. But the N64 had numerous games I enjoyed, so I decided to forget the 'Cube and just get all the N64 games I missed out on. After discovering numerous gems (Blast Corps., Tetrisphere, Banjo-Tooie, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, etc.) and learning that there were only 296 North American releases, I knew that I must own them all (I'm only 13 games away from that goal, if anyone's wondering).
