RANDOM FACT

On a traffic-free day, yours truly is just a half hour's drive away from the circuit.

POINTS OF DISCUSSION

  1. Felipe Massa has become championship leader for the first time in his career - do you feel he can be in the title picture come Brazil?
  2. On the other hand, McLaren come from a triple-penalty weekend - Are the testing times a positive sign for the Woking crew?
  3. Toyota have shown massive improvement: 14 points in the last 2 races alone. Are they the serious contenders for 4th now?
  4. Incredibly, it's now the half-way point of the season. Who are the heroes and villains of the year so far for you?

I honestly don't feel that Massa is a complete enough driver to win a world championship. He drives smoothly enough and he's stopped making the rookie mistakes he used to make but he's just not consistant enough in races, he doesn't seem to be able to hold it together and turn up the wick when he needs to. In my eyes he will be another Reubens, fast on his day but not able to put together a perfect enough season to beat his team mate when the flag falls in Brazil.

McLaren are a great team and if they aren't going about making silly mistakes as they did in France then they will be at the sharp end of the grid, simple as that. This year however Ferrari have been consistantly quicker on most all tracks so they will challenge for the win but we will see come race day.

If Toyota can hold the car together and get Glock performing then they should be solid point scorers but they always seem to lose out somewhere. Whether it just be a poor performance from the drivers or the car just not coming together then they will end up falling out of the midfield fight because it's just SO close.

Hero: Superman.

Villain: Mosley, as always.

I gotta agree with KA. I don't think Massa will be a contender near the end of the season. He hasn't been making the same stupid mistakes recently, but I have a feeling it won't be long before we see another one :?

I think McLaren will be stronger here than they were last season, but I think Ferrari will still have the upper hand. McLaren may be quicker in qualifying, but Ferrari's race pace may still be stronger.

As for heroes and villains, I'm gonna go with Sutil for the hero. He's really impressed me this season, and running so well in Monaco really showed his talent. Definitely a driver that should be in a championship winning team. For villains, i shall go with Mosely, for obvious reasons....

As mentioned in the top post, I can vouch for what the weather is actually doing, living so close to the circuit. There's heavy rain predicted for tomorrow as well, so I'll get soaked in 6th form tomorrow. And Thursday. And Friday. Great.

Again? These weather predictions are hardly accurate because it always turns to be the opposite. Take Montreal for example. Heavy rain and storms were predicted for the whole weekend. Reality was Friday was just damp and no rain at all for quali and race. Magny-Cours was a similar case. Rain was predicted before the race. Didn't happen. Only a light drizzle. Shows how accurate F1's forecast is.

And besides, me and my family are going to Silverstone this weekend. The last thing we want is rain.

My forecasts are from the BBC - which, on the day, always seem accurate. I was able to see no rain come Sunday for France.

Yeah, I'm yet to see an incorrect forecast for my area when using the BBC's new-ish system. I don't know who provides the F1 weather, but its absolutely awful. I'm an hour from the circuit, so the weather here won't reflect Silverstone fully.

Well yesterday, again, there wasn't a drop of rain at all, and it's nice and dry here, and it's nice and dry at Silverstone. Rain is very unlikely today imo.

CURRENT PREDICTIONS:

FRIDAY: Sunny (Max 20 deg. C)
SATURDAY: Heavy Rain (Max 18 deg. C)
SUNDAY: Heavy Rain (Max 19 deg. C)

Massa leads first practice despite crash

Ferrari's Felipe Massa beat the two McLarens to the fastest time in Friday morning practice at Silverstone - despite the Brazilian sitting out the final third of the session after a heavy crash on oil at Stowe.

Massa was unhurt in the high-speed accident, which left his Ferrari with significant rear-end damage. He lost control on the oil dropped by Fernando Alonso's Renault, which expired on the approach to Stowe with half an hour to go.

Although the former champion stayed to the far left and immediately pulled onto the run-off, his ailing car left a trail of fluid on the racing line going into the corner.

Timo Glock provided an early warning when he ran wide on the oil, and then moments later Massa hit the slippery surface and snapped into a violent spin that took him straight into the barriers.

An 18-minute stoppage followed while the Ferrari was retrieved and the spilt oil covered with cement dust.

With much of the far end of the Hangar Straight covered with the white powder when the sessions finally resumed for the last quarter of an hour, track conditions were not conducive to rapid times.

That meant Massa remained at the head of the order despite his accident. He had hit the front a few minutes before the crash, producing a 1:19.575 lap to beat previous pace-setter Heikki Kovalainen, who had earlier swapped the advantage with his McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari.

Both McLarens managed to improve their times slightly late on despite the spillage at Stowe, with Kovalainen and Hamilton ending the session just 0.012 and 0.048 seconds behind Massa respectively.

Kovalainen had to make two late attempts after one potentially quick run was disrupted when he had to back off to avoid Giancarlo Fisichella in the complex, as the Force India rejoined after a quick visit to the Brooklands gravel.

Raikkonen stayed fourth at the end of the morning, while Robert Kubica took fifth for BMW on his second flying lap - his first attempt having been impeded by Massa, much to Kubica's chagrin.

Alonso was ****fied sixth despite his Renault's apparent engine failure, with his teammate Nelson Piquet taking eighth. The pair were split by Sebastian Vettel, as the young German put in another impressive practice performance for Toro Rosso.

After his retirement announcement yesterday, David Coulthard claimed ninth for Red Bull this morning, while Williams' Nico Rosberg completed the top ten.

While Massa's accident was by far the most dramatic of the morning, it wasn't the only incident. Glock rotated his Toyota in spectacular fashion on the way out of Brooklands early on, while Force India's Adrian Sutil held a wild ride over the grass through the Becketts complex, getting significantly airborne over some of the undulations in the run-off.

Just popping in quickly to inform you of weather for today:

Silverstone is currently wet. There is sun and strong winds coming along which is likely to dry the track, but then more showers are likely to hit the circuit near the end of the race. In effect, last year's European GP but at a lower scale.

British Grand Prix Result:

The weather once again making for an interesting race; an awful race for Ferrari, and an important win for Hamilton. I can't imagine how much more of a lottery we'd have if there was a safety car...

A fantastic race, a masterful drive from Hamilton (this coming from an anti-hamiltoner :P) Poor strategy from Ferrari, Massa was all over the road Kimi had a couple of spins so a bit of a disapointment for me! Great race from Reubens, great calls from himself and Honda got him a well deserved podium! Poor Webber having that spin, he really could have made something of the race. Heikki again just didn't seem to have the pace :( hope he comes right soon! Three way tie for the championship makes this 2nd half of the season unmissable!
