.:: 2010 HUNGARIAN GRAND PRIX ::.

Photobucket

Welcome to the 2010 Hungarian GP Thread. cjek and mjk1 will keep the thread updated with the latest times as they happen.

RANDOM FACT

McLaren have won four of the last five races held at the Hungaroring.

CIRCUIT STATS

Photobucket

2010 Race Number: 12
Circuit Event Number: 25
Circuit Length: 2.722 miles
Number of Laps: 70
Lap Record: 1:19.071 (M.Schumacher, 2004)

2009 Podium:
1.
Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)
2. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)
3. Mark Webber (Red Bull)

POINTS OF DISCUSSION

  1. Ferrari walk away from the German GP with a $100,000 fine for breaching Sporting Regulations and bringing the sport in to disrepute - they still have been referred to the WMSC, but does the initial penalty fit the crime?
  2. With similar downforce levels to Monaco, can Ferrari build on their German 1-2 and take another at the Hungaroring?
  3. Last year, Felipe Massa had a horrendous accident which took him out for the rest of the season. On year on, how do you assess his return so far?
  4. At their home race, Mercedes ended up a whole lap down on the race leaders and took just 6 points - for a team that was solidly 4th fastest at the start of the year, where is it going wrong for them given the midfield battle has pretty much caught them?
  5. McLaren were almost invisible in Germany - nowhere near the Ferraris and Red Bulls, but still a mile ahead of the rest - have the updates not worked for the team or have Red Bull and Ferrari just moved further forward?

1. No. Any actions by the WMSC would kill my predictions. 2. Sure. As long as both drivers aren't killed. 3. Filled with disappointment and number two. 4. Their factory? 5. They certainly didn't work in Germany.

It will be interesting to see if McLaren can get this downforce thing working as it seems to have destabalised the car handling from what I can gather (the drivers going off in practice, lack of grip etc). Maybe it is in the mind now (i.e. "the car cant respond" rather than the car wont respond).

I get the feeling Mercedes should give this season up and focus on a new car, but now the other teams have got the same technology Brawn GP used to their advantage last year, can Brawn pull another one out of the bag? I say he probably can as with Red Bull's technican (the former Mclaren dude whos name I forget) they seem to have the touch that others sometimes seem to have not got in getting an average looking car to the front of the pack.

  1. Theyhave been punished for a clear infringement of the rules but one doesn't know what punishment is legislated for the crime nor is there any precedent. Team orders have been enforced in the past between 2003 and now it's just never been done so blatantly.
  2. Ferrari - like Red Bull and Renault seem a little better at soaking up bumps and low speed traction so these three should do well. McLaren's sensitive floor requires and incredibly stiff suspension settings meaning McLaren may struggle again this weekend.
  3. He hasn't fought in the same way as he used to - been completely outclassed by Alonso. That is... until Hockenheim.
  4. I don't think the Brawn team had much more after the DDD last year, teams with more funding and more brains have overtaken them and they'll need to secure some serious backing (which they have in Mercedes and Petronas) to make some serious developments over the upcoming winter to have a shot at the title in 2011.
  5. The McLaren is quite fickle at the moment I think. The car needs to be sprung too stiff for the floor to work - or at least that's one very plausible explanation for their early weekend offs and sporadic pace. When the car suits the track it's a rocket, when it doesn't it flounders around a little bit.

My predictions on the Hungarian GP 2010? A close fight between Red Bull and Ferrari should be on the cards. Ferrari proved at the German GP at the Hockenheim that they have really stepped up their game. Their recent upgrades really have propelled the F10 foward and it is now producing downforce levels very close to that of the dominating Red Bull RB6. This was displayed at the German GP around the twisty stadium section in sector three, where Alonso in the Ferrari was just 00.006 seconds off the Red Bull of Mark Webber. With the Hungaroring being a twisty, high downforce circuit; this should bring Ferrari into play with the Red Bulls. Dont expect McLaren to be strong. Despite having the blown diffuser, they are having trouble with optimizing its setup. Both drivers, Hamilton and Button; have complained of the car being twitchy. Considering that the Hungaroring is mostly corners, this wont help them one bit. And Mercedes? Well they haven't really been strong anywhere this season. Williams however, looks to be resurging. They seem to be competitive in the high downforce areas recently, so I'd hardly be suprised to see them in front of Mercedes.

WARWICK JOINS STEWARDS FOR HUNGARY

Derek Warwick will join the stewards' panel for this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Warwick is the fourth British ex-grand prix driver to advise race officials this year, after former world champions Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell advised in Monaco and at Silverstone respectively, while grand prix winner Johnny Herbert also joined the panel in Malaysia and Turkey.

Warwick competed in Formula 1 from 1981 to 1993, during which time he drove for Toleman, Brabham, Lotus, Arrows and Renault, with whom he nearly won the 1984 British Grand Prix.

After winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1992, Warwick drove in the British Touring Car Championship, before co-founding the BTCC's highly successful Triple 8 team in 1997.

Anthony Davidson's eyes are amazing to catch that - that Red Bull front wing is DEFINITELY flexing. It doesn't seem much but, presumably, that small amount of movement would do a huge amount for the downforce.

It was very apparent in Hockenheim

GIF image of the flexi wing.

The red lines are based on the chassis - so a fixed reference point. The Red Bull front wing is flexing in a big way at the extremities, speculation is that Red Bull have arranged the layers of carbon fibre in such a way that the wing has enough strength to pass the vertical load tests by the FIA scrutineers but flexes when a more uniform pressure from airflow is applied at high speed.

There's a video here - if you watch the front wing endplates you can see obvious movement of the extremities under braking - most notably at the hairpin - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlvA2UdXVEY

Jenson Buttons front wing -very little flex

Mark Webbers super-flexi wing

The degree of flex is readily apparent in this comparison of similar shots of Jenson Buttons car and Mark Webbers.

The advantage of the flexing wing allows the car to drop a small amount of drag and increase ground effect at the extremities at speed- which increases downforce at no drag penalty. This is a sweet deal for Red Bull at Hungary with many high speed flowing turns.

As we can all see this now, As far as i'm aware any aerodynamic pieces like this are deemed illegal by the rules? Didn't McLaren or Ferrari have the same thing a couple of years ago with their rear wing flexing?

BMW as well were stung in the flexi wing saga and the FIA stipulated that all teams were to have slot gap separators on their rear wings to make sure they did not flex toward each other in an excessive manner.

The rules specificly state that bodywork cannot move independant of the chassis - however the way the FIA concludes that the bodywork does not move is via their flex tests which the Red Bull wings comply to.

So even with this... very F**king clever idea, they comply with the rules and its deemed allowed by the scrutineers and Stewards?

Newey...you've done it again haven't you :P

FORCE INDIA FINED FOR NEW TYRE BLUNDER

Force India has been fined 5000 Euros for using a set of tyres on Paul di Resta's car in first practice that were not supposed to be used before Saturday.

The race stewards found that Force India had been in breach of Article 25.4 of Formula 1's sporting regulations when it used a set of prime tyres that should only have been run from Saturday morning's final practice session.

Article 25.4 states: "Each nominated driver will be allocated three sets of dry-weather tyres for use during P1 and P2, two of "prime" specification and one of "option" specification. These are the only dry-weather tyres which may be used during these sessions."

The tyre mix-up comes just one week after Force India was reprimanded at the German Grand Prix for accidentally fitting the wrong tyres to Vitantonio Liuzzi and Adrian Sutil's cars during an early pit stop.

It's sneaky as hell but Red Bull have whipped a blinder out. It wont take long for teams to catch on IF what is being speculated is true.

KOBAYASHI HANDED 5 PLACE GRID PENALTY

Kamui Kobayashi was handed a five-place grid penalty ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix for missing a call to go into the FIA garage during qualifying.

The Sauber driver was called in by the FIA stewards to be weighed after the end of Q2, but the Japanese did not see the red light in the pitlane and continued to drive towards his team's garage.

As a consequence, Kobayashi was given a penalty and will have to start the race from 23rd position.

Kobayashi seems very much off the pace this weekend, I hope he can make some places up in this race. It seems odd that De la rosa is ahead.

FOUR DRIVERS REPRIMANDED

Four Formula 1 drivers have been given reprimands for failing to stay above the minimum lap time set by the FIA ECU during qualifying in Hungary.

The rules state that "drivers must stay below the maximum time set by the FIA between the safety car line after the pit exit and Safety Car line before the pit entry."

The rule was introduced earlier this year in order to avoid drivers going too slowly back to the pits.

Renault's Vitaly Petrov, HRT's Sakon Yamamoto, Virgin's Timo Glock and team-mate Luca di Grassi have been reprimanded for driving too slowly following the end of the qualifying segments.

The maximum time in Hungary was one minute and 26 seconds.

SOURCE: Autosport

ED: Surely Yamamoto's is a bit harsh given, ya know, his lap time in Q1 was a 1:26?

Eurgh. Sam Bird needs some ****ing luck. Pole position in GP2 yesterday but stalled on the grid at the THIRD attempt, and now a mechanical issue with the car this morning. This is the guy who is impressing me most in GP2 currently.

As for Pastor Maldonardo... goodness me. Get him at the front and he's unstoppable. Come sprint race on Sunday when he's bunched with other guys, he's an idiot. Knocks his front wing loose and, even when being given the black and orange flag by the stewards, keeps driving until he gets DQ'ed. Problem is he has a massive lead in the championship already, he doesn't need to do these things.

Safe to say, I don't think this year's GP2 Champion will make it in to F1 next year.

DotD: Kobayashi

SotD: Webber

Worth a mention: Petrov for a fifth place finish, good drive by him but let down with the Hamilton pass.

Excellent drive from Webber, blasting out a million quali laps on tyres that shouldn't have lasted as long as they did. Vettel - great job from him, did everything he needed to but lost out with his helping of Webber, playing the team game. Sauber did a good job to get Kobayashi from 23rd to 9th and he himself raced very well. Petrov has done well to score his best result too.

But Schumacher... what the hell was that? Attempted murder?

DotD: Kamui Kobayashi - 23rd to 9th at the Hungaroring is no mean feat. Was tempted to give it to Vitaly for out qualifying Kubica and his lightening start.

SotD: Mark Webber - strongest drive in the field

RENAULT, MERCEDES FINED FOR PIT INCIDENTS

Renault has been fined $50,000 for the unsafe release of Robert Kubica during a pitstop at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Pole was involved in an accident with Force India's Adrian Sutil, who crashed into the Renault after the team released Kubica when the German was diving into his pit slot.

Sutil was forced to retire then and Kubica continued only to retire eight laps later.

Kubica was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty during the race, and Renault was fined by the stewards after the event.

Mercedes was also fined $50,000 for the unsafe release of Nico Rosberg, the German losing a tyre as he drove back into the pitlane following his pitstop.

SCHUMACHER GETS TEN-PLACE GRID PENALTY

Michael Schumacher will lose ten places on the starting grid for the Belgian Grand Prix after being penalised for his driving in Hungary.

The German and Williams driver Rubens Barrichello came very close to crashing after Schumacher pushed the Brazilian against the wall on the main straight as the Brazilian attempted to pass.

The move angered Barrichello, who slammed Schumacher's move as 'crazy' after the race.

Schumacher himself said he had done nothing wrong.

The FIA stewards penalised the seven-time champion as he had "illegitimately impeded car 9 during an overtaking manoeuvre."

The Mercedes driver will lose ten places on the grid in the next race in Belgium.

So Schumacher will start 28th on the grid for the next race since his qualifying just gets worse  ( yes I did mean 28th )

Good race, thought Webber was brilliant putting those laps in after the SC.

DotD: Webber - no contest

SotD: Barrichello - for standing his ground and getting past Schumacher, and to be fair he had a good race all round!
