The first ever night race in Formula 1 has moved a step closer after circuit designer Hermann Tilke said it was now possible to successfully stage and televise such an event.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone recently said that one or two night-time races could on the cards by the end of the decade – with Japan and China in the frame to host them.

And now in an interview with Autosport magazine, Tilke says that advances in both lighting and camera technology mean night racing is now a feasible option for F1 on its current circuits.

“The basic problem is lighting,” he told the magazine.

“The tracks don’t need to change – you just need to have the space to install the lighting system.

“You also need a certain amount of brightness to allow TV cameras to show the cars property – not as blurry streaks!

“But there have been tremendous developments in lighting and camera technology, so I don’t see it being a problem.”

The onset of night racing at grands prix in the Far East would likely prove to be a hit with European TV viewers in particular, with races moved into a more traditional afternoon slot.

And F1 would not be the first major motorsport series to experiment with racing under floodlights, with American series’ NASCAR, Champ Car and IndyCar already having hosted night-time events.

That's really nice! I would love to see the cars roaring through the corners at night.

Nah. Not a good idea really. Too dangerous. Besides, fans, drivers and mechanics would get sleepy round night time anyway.

Lighting is a problem. If there was to be a night race, there would high to be very high watt lights all around the track which costs money. A night race would be very cool however.

I like the idea a lot, but I agree with General-Doug that it is dangerous. Saftey comes first before entairtainment. :)

i agree with the safety comment but, F1 could use a bit of spicing up and night races could do that. Their are many other motorsports that do it (ie NASCAR, Le mans, champcar [?] etc) Plus i hate having to get up at 5am to watch my favourite driver get taken out at the first corner. :?

The point that makes NASCAR and Indy 500 available in night time is that they all have bowl like circuits. Light can be focused at one spot only. In F1 however, we have circuits like Spa and Suzuka were they twist around a lot. It is quite a problem for the light as they have to be positioned porperly to ensure adequate lighting is achieved. The only circuit I see possible in doing this is Indianapolis alone.

The best race for night time i believe would be Malaysia, it has the room for the lights, and in all honesty, the track doesn't twist as much as Suzuka or Spa. i think it would be a good one, if not, the Aussie would go well for a night race, becuase it has the fences put up already, the lights would be easy to put up behind them.

I'd like to see an F1 race at night. I say give it a shot and if ti don't work then don't do it again, but it never hurts to try something new in my opinion.

Try night races in Monaco, lool  The idea of night races is really tempting, may be if they design a special circuit for it to meet the lighting requirements. BTW, I think F1 Career Challenge on the PS2 had night races as an unlockable feature, but I've never tried it, that game wasn't that good anyway. :P

The ideal one for a night race at the moment is indy, reason is beacuse it already hosts IRL, NASCAR night races. the only downside is, us brits will have to stay up till like 12-1am to watch it.

Would the F1 car's need to be fiited with head lights? I mean if NASCAR's needed them and their only driving round a big "bowl" so to speak, im sure F1 cars would need them especially when driving circuits like SPA.

if they were small enough and bright enough they could be fitted to the exterior of the wing mirrors. Im from New Zealand so American races are at 5am, Euro races at 12am Aussie and Malaysia 3 - 5pm and everything else late evening, a particular annoyance was Bathurst and the Japanese grandprix being on at the same time :(

Not possible, it would be fast, too dark, and the lights on the side of the track would flare them up. :P

you'd have to have proper flood lights all around the track for it to work in my opinion.

Le Mans cars have headlights. I know it was cool, but I don't think racing around in the dark at 300 km/h is cool.

Unless if the have flourescent strips at the front and rear wing. :D

tilke has allready wrecked f1 with bahrain, hockenheim and sepang circuits. Turkey is a rare sucess. But seriously, who is really looking forward to suzuka? ive had enough of tilke, i dont think that imola would be off this year if it were'nt for his tracks.

If the rules are anything like those in Drag Racing most classes bar Top Fuel (dragsters) have to be representative of their mass prodcution counterparts and as such must have headlights, whether they are painted on stickers or real. Same for rear lights.

Last off topic post I promise.

NASCAR stands for: The National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing. These things are as far from stock as possible, they keep the front and rear "lights" to keep some representation of stock.
