Isn't it nice for once to see no Ferrari, McLaren or BMW in the points at this early stage?

Feels like a changing of the guard

The engines are largely equivalent - in fact, Honda would probably be further ahead somewhat as the offer to tune their engine was made when the same offer was presented to Renault.

With the way the FIA works out where everyone stands in the Championship, Force India are ahead of Ferrari. Therefore right now, Ferrari stand 10th and last in the Constructors Championship.

If, in the unlikely circumstances, the diffuser teams lose their points tomorrow, the championship tables will look even more goofier than they do already:

DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP

  1. Fernando Alonso (Renault, 11.5 pts.)
  2. Nick Heidfeld (BMW, 9 pts.)
  3. Sebastien Buemi (Toro Rosso, 8 pts.)
  4. Sebastien Bourdais (Toro Rosso, 8 pts.)
  5. Mark Webber (Red Bull, 6 pts.)
  6. Adrian Sutil (Force India, 5 pts.)
  7. Lewis Hamilton (McLaren, 3 pts.)
  8. Giancarlo Fisichella (Force India, 3 pts.)
  9. Felipe Massa (Ferrari, 2.5 pts.)
  10. Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull, 1 pt.)
  11. Nelson Piquet (Renault, 1 pt.)
  12. Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari, 0.5 pts.)

CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPIONSHIP

  1. Toro Rosso (16 pts.)
  2. Renault (12.5 pts.)
  3. BMW (9 pts.)
  4. Force India (9 pts.)
  5. Red Bull (7 pts.)
  6. McLaren (3 pts.)
  7. Ferrari (3 pts.)

If the points were taken away, could Heidfeld possibly gain the worst win ever?

* Won a race off-track
* got half the points for it
* waited 10 days for it
* been passed on the final complete lap as it was

Another thing to add: at this stage, all the KERS drivers points together do not even beat the constructors total of Toyota at the moment, let alone Brawn GP.

This just goes to show that Eddie was right, KERS is a pointless technology in F1 cars, and is a very useless expense, I see KERS only work well enough in, China, Bahrain, and Fuji, Thats it.

Apart from that, its pretty useless by the standings so far

KERS is useless in F1 cars, but is thrown in for "relevancy" to road cars, electric hybrids, not gas chuggers. Anyways, when you have to pimp relevancy, your way of making coin is going to the outhouse. Note: Chiggers is a word.

I don't care for the KERS either but it does add to the strategy of the race. So basically it is there just to challenge the teams while to the layman it looks like F1 is running 'hybrids.' PR and more dramatic racing, hopefully.

Note: Chiggers is a word.XSamFisherX

Button has now won the same amount of races that Massa took in 2008 and what helped Raikkonen take the title in 2007. 61 points is almost two thirds of the points Hamilton took to win the title last year. This is something special.

And so a victory for Webber moves him ahead of Barrichello, as does 2nd for Vettel. Next race looks to begin the mathematical eliminations too, if Button can finish 6th or higher. 7th, despite giving him 70 points with 70 left available, wouldn't be enought to stop the 0 pointers from still mathematically having a chance of beating him, having won just 6 races right now.

With Force India taking 2nd in the race, their first points have finally been scored, and puts them 9th, ahead of Toro Rosso. BMW also jump Renault into 7th.

Jenson Button leads the World Championship with 14 points advantage over his teammate with 4 races to go. There are two other contenders too in Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, although their chances are now slim. On average, Button's three title challengers need to out-score him on these averages to take the title from him:

2nd place: Rubens Barrichello - 3.5 points per race: Wins with Button 3rd in the final 4 races will see the Brazilian overthrowing Jenson.

3rd place: Sebastian Vettel - 6.5 points per race: Wins with Button 6th in the final 4 races will see the German overthrowing Jenson.

4th place: Mark Webber - 7.125 points per race: Wins with Button 7th in the final 4 races will see the Australian overthrowing Jenson.

In realistic terms, Mark Webber has no chance of becoming Champion. Jenson only needs to outscore Mark by 2 points in Singapore to eliminate him from the title race. One more race win for Jenson at any point now guarantees Australia will have to wait at least another year.

Vettel - with his fluctuating performances as well as Jenson's - in my opinion right now still appears to be the most likely person to overthrow Jenson. Reasons being when Vettel has scored big in a race recently, Jenson's not quite been there. If Brawn have truly found their pace again, Vettel is another hopeless chance for the title. If Jenson wins in Singapore, Vettel will have to finish 2nd in order to remain in the title fight, otherwise he too will have to wait another year. Vettel surely has to be Germany's 2nd World Champion in F1 though.

Whilst the statistics favour Rubens, the reason I give him less of a chance than Vettel is that in the past three races - when his game has really been on the up, he's only taken 2 points out of Button each race, even though Jens DNF'ed Spa. With an average of 3.5 needed, he's still 1.5 points off what he needs. Rubens cannot be eliminated from the title contention in Singapore, but will need to score at least 4 more points than Jenson in the night race to ensure that the possibility of elimination can't take place in Japan.

3 races to go, and Button extends his lead to 15 points. Here's how the picture unravels now:

2nd place: Rubens Barrichello - 5 points per race: Wins with Button 5th or lower in the remaining races will see Rubens take the title. On the other hand, Barrichello is now in trouble of being dropped out of contention, but the chances still remain slim. Button needs to score 6 more points than Barrichello in Japan to ensure he removes his teammate from the picture.

3rd place: Sebastian Vettel - 8.3 points per race: Wins with Button 8th or lower in the remaining races will see Vettel take the title. Vettel himself needs to outscore Jenson by 6 points in Japan though if he wants to remain in the title picture.

4th place: Mark Webber - Now out of contention after his crash in Singapore.

I think it will be settled in Brazil, not Suzuka, I know the championship has had all sorts of twists and turns, just like today, but Button having to out score Barrichello by 6pts in Suzuka of all places?, Will need a reliability issue of sorts or an accident to happen, Both Barrichello and Jenson know the circuit very well and will be hard pressed if either of them will give up there. Red Bull I think will provide a threat, and with Webber out the picture title-wise, I think he could yet play a pivitol role in how the title fight will play out.

Vettel needs not be outscored by Button in Suzuka by 6points, which I think will be hard pressed to happen seeing as the track plays into Red Bull's hands and Vettel being a young charger like he is, I don't think things will change that much in Suzuka, despite I expect to see an epic race and some good scraps all the way through the field.

I leave this post with a very famous quote.

"Anything can happen in Formula One, and it usually does"

Murray Walker.

So neither title was wrapped up in Japan. Here's how both look now:

Constructors Championship:
- Brawn GP need to score half a point in either Brazil or Abu Dhabi to take the title, no matter what Red Bull do.

Drivers Championship:
- Rubens Barrichello needs to outscore Jenson Button by 5 points in Brazil to keep himself in contention. 4 points won't be enough.
- Sebastian Vettel needs to outscore Jenson Button by 7 points in Brazil to keep himself in contention. 6 points won't be enough.

So how could the title be wrapped up in Brazil?

Barrichello wins, Button finishes 3rd or higher
Barrichello 2nd, Button finishes 5th or higher
Barrichello 3rd, Button finishes 7th or higher with Vettel failing to win
Barrichello 4th, Button finishes 8th or higher with Vettel lower than 2nd

If none of these scenarios play out, the title fight will go to Abu Dhabi.

Lewis Hamilton's Brazil podium gives him a remarkable achievement.. he has now been on the podium at every titled F1 Grand Prix he has raced at, in his 3 year F1 career:

2007: Aus, Mal, Bah, Spa, Mon, Can, USA, Fra, GBR, Hun, Ita, ***
2008: Tur, Ger, Eur, Bel, Chn
2009: Brz

The only event missing is the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Let's wait and see if he can complete the achievement.

And so that's that - Jenson Button is World Champion, with Sebastian Vettel finishing 2nd. with a no-score for either McLaren or Ferrari, the Woking team beats the Scuderia for only the 2nd time this decade. BMW finish their 4-year F1 stint by jumping Williams in the final race, meaning they beat the team they formerly supplied engines to for all four years. How will 2010 look though with 3, maybe 4, new teams?
