Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in pole position to become the lead commentator when the BBC takes over the broadcasting of F1 races next season.

With the BBC announcing they've bought the rights to F1 from Bernie Ecclestone after ITV's withdrawal, the race is now on to see who will take over from James Allen and Martin Brundle as the UK's new commentators.

And according to theTimes, Hammond, who survived a high-speed crash while trying to break the British land speed record for Top Gear two years ago, is the most likely candidate for the job.

The newspaper also reported that the BBC are planning on letting the 'Hamster', as Hammond is known, along with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, loose at grand prix weekends in an attempt to extend the audience beyond "petrolheads."

If this is true... sweet :D

Honestly, I'd prefer Brundle to stay on, he's quite knowledgeable and on it a lot of the time (poor guy, how many times does he have to correct Allen?), but seriously, rid of Allen. Goodness...

That sounds great :) I'd be dead keen on Hamster commentating alongside Brundle, however he didn't crash while trying to break the lap record.... :D [/nitpick]

Well Brundle will be a free agent so to speak, so i feel they should, but in all honesty, letting Clarkson, and May on the scene may be a bit much for me, Hamster, no problem most sensible of the bunch. But i agree with you lot, Brundle and Hammond would be awesome :)

I can't imagine the three of them doing it. I'll bet they will talk more about the cars rather than the race and probably criticising Button. :D

Am i the only person concerned with the way things are headed?? ITV had a perfect team with Martin Brundell, James Allen, Marc Blundell, Louise Goodman and the rest of the crew and it just wont be the same without them at all for me.

Martin Brundells grid walk was one of the best parts of the pre race show for me especially because he personally knows most of the drivers and crew members, his and Marc Blundells inside knowledge of the sport is unparalleled and the BBC dont have anyone of this calibre on board.

Formula 1 has been my passion since i was 5 yrs old and im now 34 so its been a massive part of my life but the way things are headed i can see me not wanting to watch it on tv, look at when sky tried to get in on the act and what a disaster that turned out to be.

If the BBC have got any sense at all they will do all they can to get the itv crew on their side, as much as i like the hamster he's not someone i'd like to see covering F1 and as for Clarkson and May thats simply the worst thing they could do to ruin it completely if u ask me. Top Gear is a great show but it should be kept seperate from F1.

Im intrigued to see how things are gonna pan out but at the same time im very concerned this could be the end of great F1 coverage.

What I don't get is the price the BBC are paying for it. 220 million for five years! It's a pity. On STV, the most fans that were ever watching it at the same time was 3 million. Scottish football on BBC Scotland would have at least 4 million viewers (not including me) and cost 2 million. Looking forward to Hammy commentating, though.
