Ralf Schumacher has claimed he is one top of the top three drivers in Formula 1 alongside Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.

The 31-year-old German starts his 11th F1 season in Melbourne next week and has six grand prix wins to his name.

However despite not having won a race since the 2003 French Grand Prix, the Toyota driver is convinced that he should be put in the same bracket as the sport’s recognised top two.

“You always depend on your car as a driver,” he told Germany’s Bild newspaper.

“In a Minardi for example, my brother would not have won a world title.

“I definitely count myself among the strongest three drivers.

“Clearly Alonso and Raikkonen are fast – but I must hide behind nobody.

“If I was not convinced, I would not be in Formula 1 any more.”

Schumacher’s chances of returning to the winner's circle in the early part of 2007 look slim, since Toyota has struggled for pace alongside its rivals in pre-season group testing.

But the German, in his third year with the Cologne-based squad, remains confident that the Japanese car giant is still on course to achieve its F1 ambitions – with a first win still not out of the question for this season.

“We must work to improve,” he said.

“I know that we are on the right path – the investment will bear fruit some time.

“I hope still in 2007.

“I intend to win the first race for Toyota.

“Toyota is and remains the team of the future," he added.

"This company, all the workers have only one goal – to lead Toyota to the top.

“The Formula 1 title is only a question of time."ITV.com/f1

I think he is confusing himself with his brother, he got beaten by his teammates most of the time(overall points) with a few exceptions. Dont get me wrong, with a strong car he can be briliant but I would pick Button or an onform Fisichella and even Montoya over (R)alf any day.

Dont make me laugh! Ralf, you have made my day dude thats the funniest thing ive heard in ages! If he was good he woulda challenged for the championship in 2003. He didnt so there. Look I know he crashed but even before Indy he was a VERY long shot for the championship.

He is a decent driver and was a very good driver in 03 but now he has no chance of being in the top 3.  Massa, Raikkonen and Alonso are miles better than him and drivers such as Button, Barrichello and maybe even Kubica are better than him at the moment.

Theres no getting away from the fact that he is a good driver, otherwise he wouldn't be in F1, and he is a strong headed driver, but he is not in the top 3.

Dont get me wrong Ralf is a good driver but definatly not in the top 3 at the moment. I would say he has a good 10 or 12 better drivers ahead of him. If hes got the right car he can be a really good driver but i feel that this move to Toyota has ruined his career.

well IMO ralf is nothing special, hes like a Tiago Monteiro, "i'll finish when i want to" kinda driver who dosent try too hard. The only reason he lasted so long in F1 is because hes a schumacher. I'll be very surprised if hes on the 08 grid.

OMG, if he made it to the F1, yes, he is good driver. Certainly not in the top three, somewhere at top 10

Ralf is a above average IMO, but definitely not in the top 3, probably not even in the top 5 at this moment.

In races, I'd put him just slightly ahead of Trulli, though I think over the course of one lap Trulli is the quicker driver. On the grid, I'd probably put Ralf somewhere in the upper mid-pack, just behind Fisichella, perhaps. He'd have to have learned something from his brother, even if by osmosis.

Of course Ralf's in the top 3... for most crashes in a driver's career (of those currently on the grid), along with Massa & Sato!

Kubica clearly has more talent. Even Hamilton seems to have a competitive side ralf hasnt seen in years. "the following people are being overpaid........Schumacher, Ralf.....that is all"

He did pretty well at Williams but he's not been a superstar. Other candadites for crazy salaries include: Jarno Trulli J.V. (even though he has left)
